SPORTS SHORTS: Coleman’s hat trick leads Bobcat girls past South Tama

TAMA — McKenna Coleman recorded a hat trick to help the Marshalltown girls’ soccer team stomp South Tama 8-0 on Monday evening.
Coleman had three goals and an assist for the Bobcats (8-3-2), who have won or tied in their last six outings. Stefani Gutierrez had a goal and an assist, while Itzabella Meraz and Jezell Ruiz scored their first goals of the season.
Yuri Ramirez and Gennese Tellez also scored for MHS, while Katie Gomez Reyes and Claire Bonzer added assists. Sophie Valdez Chavez needed to make just one goal to help the Bobcats blank the host Trojans (0-10-1).
Spartan girls share crown at Harry Dole Classic
GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls’ track and field team tied for the title at the Harry Dole Classic Co-Ed on Friday at Spartan Stadium, sharing the crown with Waverly-Shell Rock.
The Spartans and Go-Hawks both scored 163 points to win the 10-team event. BCLUW finished sixth (42), Gladbrook-Reinbeck was seventh (40), GMG was ninth (25), and North Tama was 10th (23).
Grundy Center topped the podium in six events. Ava Heeren won the 100-meter dash in 12.89 seconds, and she was second in the 200 in 27.60. Heeren also anchored the winning 4×100 relay, teaming with Jocelyn Freed, Maddy Hendershot and Allison Koch for a season-best time of 51.88.
The Spartans’ 4×400 foursome of Raelyn Steinmeyer, Hendershot, Karlee Lynch and Grace Storjohann won in 4:13.97, and Storjohann claimed the 800 in 2:24.67.
Hendershot (1:00.36) beat G-R’s Kennedy Brant (1:02.63) to the finish line in the 400, and Koch (5 feet, 4 inches) edged Brant (5-2) in the high jump.
BCLUW got two event victories in the field events, as Grace Farnsworth won the shot put (37-10 3/4) and Morgan Bergman won the discus (107-5). The Comets were second in the 4×800 in a season-best time of 10:32.30 put up by Abby Kemp, Chloe Switzer, Raegan Crawford and Kalia Stover.
GMG was led by Arianna Pierce, who placed second in the shot put (37-10 1/4). Gracie Peak was sixth in the long jump (13-11).
Gabriella Seda led North Tama with a fifth-place finish in the 400 (1:06.68). She also led off for the fifth-place 4×800, as Seda, Olivia Youngblood, Isla Breakenridge and Shawna Cibula set a season-best time of 10:47.89.
Grundy Center boys win own track meet
GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center boys’ track and field team won five events on its way to the title at the Harry Dole Classic Co-Ed on Friday inside Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans scored 115 points to pace the 12-team field, followed by Dike-New Hartford (87), Waverly-Shell Rock (84) and Aplington-Parkersburg (82). BCLUW was seventh with 68 points, Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 10th (29), North Tama took 11th (25) and GMG was 12th (16).
Brody Zinkula posted a season-best time in winning the 100-meter dash in 11.44 seconds. Brayden Davie had his season-low clocking to take the 200 (23.01) as well as the 400 (49.74). Zinkula was also second in the 400 (50.98).
Brayden Wallis and Aiden Hook teamed with Zinkula and Davie to win the 4×400 (3:31.74), while Ryker Thoren, Grant Newton, Judd Jirovsky and Wallis topped the sprint medley (1:35.13).
BCLUW’s Emmitt Petermeier finished atop the podium in the shot put (46 feet, 10 3/4 inches), and teammate Daniel Zoske was fourth (43-6 1/4). The Comets’ distance medley relay team of Zach McPhillips, Vance Hoyt, Kevin Hill and Tommy Hinderhofer finished fourth in 4:01.29.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck was led by a runner-up result for Hunter Roberts in the shot put (43-8). Hudson Clark came away from the 400 hurdles with third place (58.64), and the 4×200 team of Kaden Kauffman, Drew Eilers, Nathan Smiley and Cole Gramer took fourth (1:41.27).
North Tama’s top finishes came from the field events as Brayton Cibula took fourth in the high jump (5-4) and Ty Guthrie was fourth in the discus (128-1).
Jay Bessman of GMG claimed fifth in the discus (123-7), and the quartet of Rider Kupka, Grady Dieleman, Ethan Klemesrud and Easton Sash took fifth in the 4×400 (3:55.80).
GC/G-R boys tennis team improves to 6-1
GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ tennis team improved to 6-1 with a 7-2 victory over Osage on Friday at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex.
The Spartans won the meet with a 5-1 advantage in singles play and finished it off with a 2-1 triumph in doubles.
GC/G-R got singles wins from Elias Cakerice, Michael Lang, Kael Edwards, Evan Bingman and Remington Tack.
All three doubles matches went three sets. Carson Laube and Cakerice scored a 6-2, 4-6, (10-5) triumph at No. 1, while Bingman and Tack fought off their Osage counterparts at No. 3, 7-5, 3-6, (10-5).
Mustangs fourth in Colfax-Mingo quad
COLFAX — The East Marshall girls’ golf team finished fourth out of as many teams at the Colfax-Mingo Tournament on Friday at Colfax Country Club.
Albia won the 18-hole event with a 415, followed by BGM (419), Colfax-Mingo (453) and East Marshall (550).
Delaney Ryan led the Mustangs with a 98, followed by Hayliee VerSteegh (138), Sadie Clark (156) and Tori Mauseth (158).
