SPORTS SHORTS: Comet boys claim Iowa Star Conference title

UNION — The BCLUW boys’ golf team won the Iowa Star Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Union Hills Golf Course, distancing itself from the field by 18 strokes.

The Comets shot a 325 to finish comfortably ahead of Don Bosco (343) and Tripoli (354). North Tama came away with fourth place (364) and GMG was last out of 12 scoring teams (442).

BCLUW hoarded the hardware at the top of the individual standings, too, as juniors Nate Bishop and Zaden Eggers shot 73 and 76, respectively, to claim medalist honors.

Beau Towne tallied an 85 for fifth place, while Adam Frank and Carter McCready both carded 91 to contribute to the Comets’ final score.

North Tama was paced by Maddox Rausch, who shot an 87 to tie for sixth. Levi Harmsen was eighth with an 89, followed by Kayvin Morris (92) and Michael Harmsen (96).

Jay Bru led GMG with a 103, Drayson Stephenson shot 111, and both Jacob Beaderstadt and Brayton Davis carded 114.

Trojan girls score third at HOIAC meet

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ golf team finished third in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet it hosted Wednesday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course, trailing only Roland-Story and Nevada.

The Trojans totaled a 385 team score to finish behind Roland-Story’s 356 and Nevada’s 371. PCM (401), Greene County (446), Perry (470) and South Hamilton (498) completed the standings, while neither Grand View Christian nor Saydel fielded complete teams.

Roland-Story charted the three lowest scores of the tournament as well, with Brinley Carlson (81), Brooke Thompson (84) and Hadley Carlson (89) leading the way.

West Marshall had five of the next six scores, starting with Jillian Karsjen in fourth place with a 92. Natalie Nichols shot 94, Riley Randall had a 97, while Rachel Randall and Sienna Edler shared the fourth score honors with a 102.

Bobcat boys net fourth straight win

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team won its fourth straight match, beating Des Moines North 2-0 on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats got one goal in each half to improve to 8-4-1 overall. Rafael Ortiz and Fabian Segovia recorded the goals for MHS.

Marshalltown goalkeeper Jonathan Nunez came away with nine saves for the shutout against Des Moines North (8-4-0).

The Bobcats host Des Moines East (5-7-1) on Friday night at Leonard Cole Field. The Scarlets have claimed three straight in the series.
