SPORTS SHORTS: Comet girls claim own golf tournament title
UNION — The BCLUW girls’ golf team won its annual Comet Invite on Monday at Union Hills Golf Course, holding off South Hardin and AGWSR by 15 strokes.
The host Comets shot a combined 393 team score to distance themselves from the rest of the field. South Hardin and AGWSR tied with a 408, and the Tigers nudged ahead of the Cougars due to the fifth-score tiebreaker.
North Tama (440) was fourth, followed by Union Community (443), East Marshall (497) and GMG (563).
AGWSR’s Aniya Vogel won meet medalist honors with an 88, while BCLUW’s Leah McEwen and Emma Topp of South Hardin shared the second-best score at 89. Topp took the runner-up honors on a cardback.
East Marshall’s Delaney Ryan was fifth with a 97, while BCLUW’s Jaya Beegly was sixth with the same score.
Delaney Legg (103) and Marissa Schnathorst (104) completed the Comets’ scoring.
North Tama’s squad posted six scores within four strokes of each other, led by Kylie Catherwood and Danika Wrage with 109s. Kensington Peck added a 110, while Jessica Morrison and Brook Bradley shared the final counting score with a 112.
East Marshall’s counting scorers were Ryan (97), Hayliee VerSteegh (120), Tori Mauseth (129) and Sadie Clark (151).
GMG’s counting scores came from Landry August (132), Violet Jackson (140), Kenzie Bartel (141) and Rhianna Murty (150).
BCLUW boys nudged out by Norsemen
CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ golf team was edged out atop its Comet Invite on Monday at Oakwood Golf Course, trailing only Roland-Story by one stroke in the final standings.
The Norsemen finished in with a 318 while the Comets shot a 319 for second place. Union Community claimed third (327), followed by South Hardin (329), Hudson (339), AGWSR (355), North Tama (374) and East Marshall (383).
South Hardin’s Tucker DeMott claimed medalist honors after shooting a 3-over-par 73. BCLUW’s Zaden Eggers won a cardback for second place after tying Hudson’s Blake Delagardelle with a 74.
Nate Bishop was fifth overall for the Comets with a 78, Beau Towne took 11th with his 81, and Adam Frank rounded out BCLUW’s team scoring with an 86.
Maddux Rausch led North Tama with a round of 84, followed by Cayd Cooper (96), Levi Harmsen (96) and Michael Harmsen (98).
East Marshall’s counting scores came from Nathan Bowie (90), Cade Burchland (96), Kael Koch (98) and Von Blackburn (99).
Spartans lead local cast at Waterloo Columbus Invite
WATERLOO — The Grundy Center boys’ golf team trailed only host Waterloo Columbus in the 15-team Columbus Invitational on Monday at Sunnyside Country Club.
The Sailors shot a 314 to win the tournament, while Grundy Center was second at 317. Aplington-Parkersburg shot 323 for third, and East Marshall was fourth at 328. Gladbrook-Reinbeck placed 10th with a 369.
Charles City’s Carson Gallup claimed meet medalist honors with a 2-under-par 70. East Marshall’s Cody Weaver was second with a 74, and Grundy Center’s Judd Jirovsky was fourth at 76.
Preston Martens and Jackson Kiewiet both shot 79 for the Spartans, and Eli Wegmann and Alex Kiewiet contributed 83s for the final counting score.
Rylan Weaver shot a 77 for East Marshall, tying for sixth place, while Jackson Bidwell (86) and Wyatt Stalzer (91) also counted toward the Mustangs’ final tally.
Anthony Knaack carded an 84 to lead G-R, followed by Brayden Utter (82), Michael Boyd (96) and Austen Mathern (97).
