SPORTS SHORTS: Jirovsky, Spartans win NICL boys golf gold

CEDAR FALLS — Judd Jirovsky claimed medalist honors to lead the Grundy Center boys’ golf team to the North Iowa Cedar League meet championship on Thursday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

Jirovsky’s round of 3-under-par 69 included a 4-under 32 on the front nine. He added two more birdies but three bogeys on the back nine to claim the top spot.

Fellow Spartan Preston Martens took fourth with a 74, Jaxon Kiewiet was seventh with a 76, and Jalen Kirkpatrick claimed 18th with an 80.

Grundy Center shot a 299 to win the team title ahead of Aplington-Parkersburg (308), Waterloo Columbus (318) and East Marshall (318). Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 11th out of 15 teams with a 351.

East Marshall’s Cody Weaver claimed runner-up honors on a cardback after tying with A-P’s Benny Waller at 1-under 71. Rylan Weaver came in with a 78, Jackson Bidwell carded an 81, and Austin Crandon finished in with an 88 to round out the Mustangs’ scoring.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck got a pair of 87s from Brayden Utter and Anthony Knaack, Chad Gutknecht shot an 88, and Michael Boyd finished at 89.

Grundy girls finish atop North Iowa Cedar League meet

JESUP — The Grundy Center girls’ track and field team took the title at the North Iowa Cedar League Mega Meet on Thursday night at Jesup High School.

The Spartans crowned seven event champions on their way to first place, finishing with 96 points. Aplington-Parkersburg was second (77.5) and Jesup was third (74). East Marshall placed ninth with 44 points, and Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 13th with 24 points.

Individual wins for the Spartans came from Ava Heeren in the 100-meter dash, Maddy Hendershot in the 400, and Grace Storjohann in the 800. Allison Koch claimed the high jump title by clearing 5 feet, 6 inches, the GC relays won the sprint medley, the distance medley and the 4×400.

East Marshall got a silver-medal performance from Ashtyn Wheater in the shot put (38-6), and the Mustangs’ distance medley team of Taylor Larson, Makayla Hala, Mallory Ostroski and Sydney Hill was second in 4:24.78. Hull collected third in the 1,500 (5:09.55), and Wheater was fourth in the discus (99-9). Cora Talbert came in fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s points came mostly from Kennedy Brant, who won the 400 hurdles in a school-record time of 1:06.72. She was second in the high jump (5-4) and fifth in the 400 (1:01.58). Blake Mathern placed eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.26), and the Rebels’ sprint medley relay team of Dylan Mathern, Elly Sieh, Blake Mathern and Brant also placed eighth (1:58.05).

Grundy Center boys settle for silver at NICL track and field

JESUP — The Grundy Center boys’ track and field team finished just behind Denver in the North Iowa Cedar League’s Mega Meet on Thursday at Jesup High School.

The Spartans finished with 131 points to the Cyclones’ 148. East Marshall was 13th with 22 points and Gladbrook-Reinbeck was 14th with nine points in the 15-team invitational.

Grundy Center had seven event champions, including four relays and three individual runs. Emerson Vokes claimed both the 1,600- and the 3,200-meter runs, while Brayden Davie was first in the 400 with a new school-record time of 49.74 seconds. Spartan relays claimed first in the 4×200, 4×400, distance medley and shuttle hurdle.

Runner-up finishes went to Judd Jirovsky in the 200, the sprint medley and the 4×100 relay.

Zach Denham led East Marshall with a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 44 feet, 11 inches. Jake Farrington finished fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles, while Cael Curphy was fifth in the 400. Blake Neuroth took sixth in the 400 hurdles.

Most of Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s points came from Hudson Clark, who claimed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57 seconds. The Rebels’ 4×100 foursome of Treyvon Herron, Drew Eilers, Nathan Smiley and Clark came in eighth.

BCLUW girls claim Iowa Star Conference title

BAXTER — The BCLUW girls’ track and field team captured the Iowa Star Conference title on Thursday night, powered by a trio of first-place finishes.

The Comets totaled 111 points to pace the 16-team field. Janesville was second with 100 points, and Baxter was third at 98.5 North Tama took eighth (39), GMG was 13th (14.5) and Meskwaki was 14th (13).

BCLUW claimed first place in both the 4×800- and 4×400-meter relays. Morgan Bergman earned first place with a discus throw of 98 feet, 7 inches.

The Comets also scored second in the 4×100, 4×200, the sprint medley and the distance medley. Grace Farnsworth was second in the shot put, while teammates Kalia Stover and Abby Kemp claimed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run.

North Tama’s top finish was silver, as the Redhawks trailed only BCLUW in both the 4×800 and 4×400. Shawna Cibula clocked in at 2:33.0 for third place in the 800, while Olivia Youngblood took fourth in the 400.

Arianna Pierce led GMG with a first-place finish in the shot put (37-8), and Makayla Pendleton placed fourth in the discus (87-2).

Dorothy Bear was second in the open 400 to lead Meskwaki, clocking in at 1:04.10.

Comets lead local teams at Iowa Star boys track

BAXTER — The BCLUW boys’ track and field team led the area schools at the Iowa Star Conference meet on Thursday night, placing fourth with 72 points.

Baxter won the team title by a whopping 54 points, totaling 147 points for first place. Collins-Maxwell was second at 93, while Janesville (75) and BCLUW (72) gave chase. GMG was 10th with 29 points, North Tama was 12th (23) and Meskwaki was 15th (3) out of 16 teams.

BCLUW’s lone event victory came from Emmitt Petermeier, who won the shot put with a distance of 49 feet. The Comets also got a second-place finish from Owen Myers in the high jump after he cleared 5-8.

BCLUW relays claimed third in the 4×400 and 4×800. Myers was third in the 110-meter high hurdles, and Kevin Hill was third in the 400 hurdles. The Comets also claimed fourth in the sprint medley and the 4×100.

GMG was led by Grady Dieleman, who earned bronze in the 3,200-meter run. The Wolverines were fourth in the distance medley. Easton Sash took fifth in the 800 and Dieleman was fifth in the 1,600.

North Tama’s top result was a third-place finish from the distance medley relay. Kane Kucera was fifth in the 400 hurdles, and Tyrus Luker took fifth in the 200. Jordan Dostal placed sixth in the 1,600.

Meskwaki scored a trio of eighth-place finishes, including two for freshman Emery Roberts in the 400 and the 800 in season-best times of 56.85 and 2:17.10, respectively. The Warriors also placed eighth in the 4×200.
