SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans fourth, West Marshall eighth in 2A state meet

BOONE — The Grundy Center girls’ golf team dropped one spot on the final day and finished fourth at the Class 2A state tournament Friday at Cedar Point Golf Course.

The Spartans shot 348-357–705 to finish behind Oelwein (666), New Hampton (673) and Sumner-Fredericksburg (698).

West Marshall moved up one spot on Friday, shooting 394-369–763 to claim eighth out of 10 teams at state.

Avery Knutsen led the Spartans by placing eighth with an 83-81–164. Leah Larson (173), Holly Lubbert (181) and Kahlynn Draper (187) completed the team scoring.

Natalie Nichols paced West Marshall with a two-day total of 184. Jillian Karsjen (191) and Riley Randall (191) both shot 90 — as did Nichols — to lead the Trojans on the second day. Rachel Randall added a 157 to the final team tally.

Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Chloe Bolte won the individual state title with a 1-under-par total of 173.

STC’s Dolezal closes out 3A state debut

SOLON — South Tama’s Aubrey Dolezal couldn’t duplicate the first day’s results and slid down the leaderboard at the Class 3A girls’ state golf tournament on Friday at Saddleback Ridge Golf Course.

Dolezal, a senior, shot 80-89–169 to finish in 36th place in her state meet debut and finale.

Gilbert’s Ava Lohrbach shot 70-66–136 for an 8-under-par total of 136 for individual medalist honors, and her sister Ella shot 5-under 139 for state runner-up. The Tigers won the team title by 11 strokes ahead of Dubuque Wahlert, 611-622.
