Bobcats stagger to eighth-straight loss
The Marshalltown baseball team reached the end of a long week on the schedule with its pitching staff running on fumes, and Des Moines Roosevelt took full advantage.
The Roughriders rapped out 23 hits and capitalized on 17 free bases issued by Bobcat pitching in an Iowa Alliance Conference sweep, scoring wins of 13-6 and 10-0 in six innings on Thursday night at the MHS diamond.
Nine of Roosevelt’s 13 runs in the opening game were baserunners who reached on a walk or hit by pitch. Marshalltown corrected course with sophomore pitcher Wyatt Peters, who allowed just one run over the final four innings while walking only two.
His career-high 54 pitch appearance helped the Bobcats prolong the outcome, and the offense found its spark to chip into Roosevelt’s eventual victory.
Marshalltown (3-8) trailed 12-0 before Peters entered to pitch in the top of the fourth. The Bobcats scratched together three runs in the bottom of the inning and added two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to force Roosevelt to earn its victory.
Peters allowed just two hits and one unearned run in his four frames, striking out one. He also drove in a run with a fielder’s choice grounder that resulted in another run scoring on a Roughrider throwing error.
MHS freshman Garrett Thede added RBI singles in the sixth and seventh, driving in Aiden Holmgren and Larrs Schoenfelder, respectively, after both led off with singles.
Senior infielder Fabian Segovia drove in Thede with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, but Roosevelt (5-8) wriggled out of that jam.
Thede had two of Marshalltown’s five hits in the opener, with Segovia, Schoenfelder and Holmgren getting the others. Luke Stalzer took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs in two innings of work.
In the nightcap, Roosevelt ran its win streak in the series to eight games with a 10-0, six-inning victory behind senior pitcher Joe Schwiesow. The right-hander allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five in the complete-game performance.
Sam Greazel and Holmgren combined to allow just three walks over six innings pitched for the Bobcats, with Greazel taking the loss. He allowed five runs — four earned — on nine hits and three walks over five innings, striking out one.
Greazel walked and singled, Thede singled and Zander Stupp was hit by a pitch to account for the only four Bobcats to reach base against Schwiesow in the team’s eighth-straight loss.
Marshalltown is on tap with another six games next week, starting with a 3:30 p.m. twinbill at Des Moines Lincoln on Monday.
