The visiting Bulldogs bit the Bobcats for the twinbill sweep by scores of 10-0 and 12-3.
The Ottumwa softball team brought a bit more experience to Marshalltown and made it show with Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep.
The visiting Bulldogs batted around at least once in each game of the Iowa Alliance Conference twinbill, taking down the Bobcats 10-0 in four innings and 12-3 in five innings.
Marshalltown (4-9) managed just seven hits on the night, as sophomore pitcher Adeline Thompson twirled a three-hitter in the first game. She walked one and struck out seven, surrendering singles to Laney Danielson, Aubree Mundt and Kaelyn Coleman in the wire-to-wire win.
Danielson and Mundt hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the fourth, but Thompson struck out the next two batters she faced and forced a groundout to end the game by the mercy rule.
Briley Danielson took the loss in the circle for MHS, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one. MHS committed three errors in the loss.
Ottumwa (10-5) kept it rolling in the second game, getting out to a 7-0 lead before the Bobcats got back into the contest.
Mundt started the fourth with a walk and Olivia Wise followed with a single up the middle. One out later, Hanna Osgood hit an RBI double and Brooklyn Smith followed with a two-run single to bring the Bobcats within 7-3.
The Bulldogs put the game away in the fifth, however, by scoring five times to chase Osgood from the circle. Ottumwa sent nine batters to the plate, with a two-run double by Lexi Ferguson serving as the biggest blow of the at-bat.
Sophia Mendibles and Erynn Ward had three hits apiece to lead Ottumwa’s 12-hit attack. Ward, batting ninth, connected for a two-run homer in the top of the second.
The Bobcats get over the hump of their nine-game week with Thursday’s home doubleheader against Mason City. Marshalltown plays three games between Friday and Saturday at BCLUW’s Dave Lee Classic.
