DES MOINES — Briley Danielson pitched a no-hitter in the first game of the Marshalltown softball team’s doubleheader sweep of Des Moines North on Monday night in Iowa Alliance Conference play.
Danielson, a sophomore, struck out eight, walked one and hit a batter, facing only two more than the minimum in the first of two wins on the night for the Bobcats (8-10). She also had one of the team’s 11 hits in the opener.
Gianne Baune hit the second pitch of the game for a leadoff triple to set the tone for Marshalltown, which led 1-0 before scoring twice in the fourth inning and six times in the fifth.
The Bobcats sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth, starting with Baune’s double. Laney Danielson had an RBI single, Olivia Wise was hit by a pitch to plate another, and Abby Janssen added a two-run single to push the Bobcats toward the run-rule victory.
Bases-loaded walks to Baune and Kate Sandvick finished off the scoring for MHS.
Baune was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bobcat bats. Janssen was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Aubree Mundt doubled and scored twice.
Neither of North’s two baserunners advanced beyond second.
In the second game, Baune’s leadoff single started a three-run first inning for the Bobcat offense, which scored in four of its six at-bats in the nightcap.
Mundt had an RBI double in the three-run first; Janssen had a run-scoring single in Marshalltown’s four-run third; Sandvick hit an RBI double in the two-run fifth; and Baune hit a two-run single in the Bobcats’ three-run sixth.
Baune finished 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs, Sandvick was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, and Mundt was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Laney Danielson drove in two runs, while Brooklyn Smith, Kendall Brummel and Janssen all scored twice.
MHS sophomore pitcher Hanna Osgood benefited from all the offense, pitching three innings of one-run ball for the win. She walked three and struck out three. Smith pitched the final 2 1/3 innings before the game was called due to lightning.
Marshalltown softball plays another Alliance twinbill on the road Thursday night, facing Des Moines East in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Williams Stadium.
