MHS softball roughs up Rails to snap 6-game skid

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown softball team snapped a six-game losing streak in convincing fashion by sweeping Des Moines Lincoln in an Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader on Monday night.
Briley Danielson pitched the Bobcats (4-7) to victory in the opening game and hit a home run in the second game as Marshalltown won for the first time in two weeks. MHS claimed the first game 11-3, and it was a 15-4, four-inning triumph in the nightcap.
Kate Sandvick also homered in the second game as the Bobcats broke loose offensively with 20 hits in the doubleheader sweep of host Lincoln (2-12).
In Game 1, Danielson pitched a three-hitter, allowing two earned runs on two walks while striking out one. Marshalltown trailed 1-0 after the first inning and 2-1 after the second, but a three-run third for the Bobcats made sure they wouldn’t trail on the scoreboard for the rest of the night.
A wild pitch plated Sandvick before run-scoring singles by Olivia Wise and Kaelyn Coleman made it 4-2 MHS, and a four-spot in the fourth put the Bobcats in control. Sandvick doubled home Kendall Brummel and Gianna Baune with a double to center, and Aubree Mundt plated Laney Danielson with a sacrifice bunt.
Briley Danielson added a two-run double in the seventh to bring the score to its eventual final.
In the second game, Hanna Osgood was the beneficiary of 12 hits and 15 Bobcat runs — the team’s second-highest output of the season so far.
Osgood allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three for the win.
Sandvick went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Briley Danielson was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, while Baune was 2-for-4 with two triples and three runs scored. Laney Danielson was 2-for-3 with a double, Coleman doubled, and Wise singled. Brooklyn Smith had a pair of run-scoring groundouts and scored once.
Marshalltown’s nine-game week continues with home doubleheaders Wednesday against Ottumwa and Thursday versus Mason City. The Bobcats play Friday and Saturday in the Dave Lee Classic in Conrad.
