No. 4 Fort Dodge foils MHS
The lead was fun while it lasted.
The Marshalltown softball team stole the show to start the second game of Wednesday’s Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader against Class 4A No. 4 Fort Dodge, but the perennial powerhouse Dodgers came back in convincing fashion to finish off their sweep while running their win streak in the series to 40.
Fort Dodge (5-1, 4-0) scored 14 unanswered runs for a 14-3, five-inning victory in the second game to follow up a 12-0, five-inning win in the first game of their North Division twinbill at the MHS diamond.
Bobcat sophomore Briley Danielson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning of Game 2, driving in leadoff batter Gianna Baune for a 2-0 lead. Laney Danielson followed with a double, Aubree Mundt singled and a sacrifice fly by Kaelyn Coleman made it 3-0 Marshalltown.
Fort Dodge eventually found its timing, and the Bobcats (2-5, 2-4) couldn’t get them stopped. The Dodgers scored five times in the third, twice more in the fourth and seven times in the fifth to finish off what they started in the opener.
Hanna Osgood took the loss in Game 2, allowing nine earned runs on 15 hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings, striking out one. Karsyn Price got the final out from the circle, but Marshalltown couldn’t duplicate the early success it had against Fort Dodge hurler Aubrey Alstott.
The Bobcats racked up seven hits in the second game, led by two each from the Danielson sisters. Baune, Mundt and Kate Sandvick added singles.
Alstott supported her own cause with a home run to lead off the fourth for the Dodgers.
In the opener, Fort Dodge scored four times in its first at-bat and never looked back. Lucy Porter allowed just one hit and one walk over four innings for the win, striking out eight, and Katie Mason pitched a perfect inning of relief.
Calliegh Zimmermann led off the fourth with a solo homer in the first game, as well, and the Dodgers piled up 17 hits to end the first game early.
Briley Danielson pitched all five frames for MHS, allowing 11 earned runs on 17 hits and one hit batter. She struck out one.
Sandvick’s bunt single in the bottom of the first was the Bobcats’ only hit against Porter, who struck out seven of the next 10 batters she faced.
The Bobcats are back at home tonight with a 5 p.m. twinbill against Des Moines Roosevelt.
