SPORTS SHORTS: GMG softball team splits at BGM Tournament
BROOKLYN — The GMG softball team split a pair of games at the BGM Tournament on Saturday, falling to the host Bears before pounding Aplington-Parkersburg.
The Wolverines (4-4) trailed BGM 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Bears broke free for five runs and an eventual 7-1 triumph.
All seven runs by BGM came unearned to GMG pitcher Riah Boege, who allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out 13. The Wolverines backed her with just two hits, however, as Skyler Murty had an RBI single and Taelyn Sash added a hit. Courtesy runner Tatum Jones scored the Wolverines’ lone run.
In the second game, GMG piled up seven run in its first at-bat and breezed past A-P, 12-2 in four innings. The Wolverines got just three hits in the game, but cashed in on 12 total walks issued by Falcon pitchers and seven A-P errors.
Boege doubled and walked twice, and her courtesy runner Madison Bryant tallied two runs. Grace Mathern and Bryleigh Bartel each hit an RBI single for the Wolverines, while Natalie Upah reached base four times and scored three runs.
Boege allowed two earned runs on three hits and five total walks while striking out six for the win.
G-R baseball goes 1-1 at BGM Tournament
BROOKLYN — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team won its way into the championship game of the BGM Tournament before falling to Highland on Saturday at BGM High School.
The Rebels (3-6) defeated Grand View Christian, 5-4, to advance to the championship. G-R scored four times in the third inning to answer the Thunder’s three-spot in the top half, and the Rebels broke a 4-all tie with its run in the bottom of the fourth.
Trevor Mathern and Austen Mathern combined to pitch three innings of scoreless relief to preserve the lead, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Chad Gutknecht earned the win for his four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and one hit batter. He struck out one.
G-R managed just four hits — all singles — but capitalized on nine walks and five hit-by-pitches. Cole Gramer was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Michael Boyd was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Gutknecht walked three times and scored twice.
Highland edged the Rebels in the title game, 2-1. The Huskies (5-2) scored the tie-breaking run in the top of the sixth.
G-R got just two hits in the finale, with Austen Mathern and Gutknecht both getting singles. Trevor Mathern scored the team’s only run.
Treyvon Herron took the hard-luck loss for the Rebels, allowing six hits, one walk and two hit batters while striking out five.
Trojans hit two home runs in comeback victory
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall softball team rallied up its fourth-straight win with a 7-5 victory over Greene County in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference game.
The Trojans (7-3, 5-1) trailed 4-1 through three innings before coming back, outscoring the Rams (4-5, 3-3) 6-1 over the final four frames.
Jillian Karsjen and Lillian Fischer both homered for West Marshall. Karsjen was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Fischer was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Lily Zahnd added a double and two RBIs, and Taylor Thomas had the team’s only other hit.
Aubree Greenwood got the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and four walks, striking out six.
Comets withstand Don Bosco for Iowa Star triumph
GILBERTVILLE — The BCLUW softball team got out to a big lead and held off Don Bosco for a 6-4 win in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
The Comets (6-1) led 5-1 before Don Bosco (4-5) mounted its comeback. The Dons ran out of steam, however, after a pitching change. BCLUW freshman Eden Ladehoff pitched two perfect innings in relief of Klayre Gallentine, tallying three strikeouts for the save.
Gallentine allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three for the win. She also tripled and drove in two runs for the Comets, who totaled six hits. Grace Farnsworth hit a solo homer, while Ladehoff was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Cassie Nason and Raegan Crawford added singles.
Trojan baseball rips Rams for fifth-straight win
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall team racked up its fifth win in a row, beating Greene County 11-4 in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.
The Trojans (7-5, 5-2) led 7-0 thanks to a five-run first inning. State golf champion Hunter Polley was the beneficiary of all the offense, earning the win for his five innings of work. He allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits and one walk while striking out four. Karver Christensen and Evan Siegert got the final six outs.
Siegert was one of four Trojans to come away with two hits, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Dawson Bear was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs; DJ Ridout was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI; and Beckham DeSotel was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.
Caden Pfantz also doubled, scored, and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Redhawks erupt to run past Rockford, 12-4
ROCKFORD — The North Tama baseball team used a six-run eruption to reel in its third-straight win, beating Rockford 12-4 on Friday night.
The Redhawks (5-3) scored six times in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Clayton Williams went 4-for-4 with four runs scored to lead North Tama, while Braydon Stickles was 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs. Kayvin Morris added two hits, a run and an RBI. Kolt Knaack hit an RBI triple and scored.
Maddux Rausch pitched three innings for the win, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out four. Bryce Dostal, Chaz Hall and Knaack combined for the final four innings to finish off the Warriors (0-7).
Mustangs can’t keep up with Benton baseball
VAN HORNE — Benton Community gradually pulled away from the East Marshall baseball team for an 8-4 triumph over the Mustangs in Friday’s non-conference clash.
Kaleb Kupke went the distance on the mound for Benton (10-2), allowing five hits and three total walks while striking out four.
Xavier Slifer got the loss for his two innings of relief, allowing six runs — four earned — on three hits and three hit batters. Starting pitcher Nathan Frye allowed two runs on four hits and two total walks over three innings, striking out five in the no-decision.
Jackson Busch had two of East Marshall’s five hits, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Eli Burns doubled, Jake Farrington doubled and scored twice, and Blake Neuroth added a single, a run and a sacrifice fly.
Riceville’s fast start foils Wolverines on the road
RICEVILLE — The GMG baseball team fell too far behind to catch Riceville, falling 11-6 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference matchup. The host Wildcats (6-5) led 8-0 before GMG got on the board in the top of the fourth inning.
Colin Teske and Grady Dieleman both had two hits to lead GMG (1-6), including a double for Teske. Teske scored once and Dieleman twice.
Easton Sash and Joaquin Williams both hit a single for the Wolverines.
John O’Donnell struck out nine over 5 2/3 innings for the win for Rockford, allowing one run on three hits and three total walks. Dieleman took the loss for GMG.
