SPORTS SHORTS: Grabenbauer powers Mustangs past Denver
DENVER — The East Marshall softball team bagged its fourth-straight win by outlasting Denver 7-4 on Wednesday night, propelled by a six-RBI performance from junior Peyton Grabenbauer.
Grabenbauer had an RBI single in the first inning, a two-run single in the second, a single in the fourth and a tie-breaking, three-run single in the fifth.
Tied at 4-all with the bases loaded and two out, Grabenbauer drove home Delaney Ryan, Gianna Boswell and Vaeda Bryan with her hit to center field. Grabenbauer got thrown out trying to take second base on the play, but all three Mustang baserunners scored before the final out.
Grabenbauer allowed just two hits the rest of the way to lock down the win for East Marshall (9-2). She allowed four runs on eight hits, two walks and a hit batter, striking out seven, while also accumulating four of the Mustangs’ nine hits.
Boswell was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, while Bailey Grant, Libby Atcher and Ryan added singles. Atcher drove in the the only run Grabenbauer didn’t.
Wildcats outlast Wolverines in pitcher’s duel
GREEN MOUNTAIN — Janesville claimed the classic pitcher’s over the GMG softball team, scoring the game’s only run in the fifth inning of a 1-0 victory over the Wolverines in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference showdown.
Dani Hughes drove in Zoey Killion, who reached on an erorr, to provide Janesville (8-5) with the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth.
Zoey Barnes got the win for the Wildcats, scattering five hits and two walks against 13 strikeouts.
Riah Boege came away with 16 strikeouts for GMG (6-5), allowing one unearned run on two hits, three walks and a hit batter. The Wolverines committed five errors in the loss.
Skyler Murty led the GMG bats with two hits, including a double, and also reached on an error. Natalie Upah and Rhianna Murty also doubled, and Boege added a single, but the Wolverines were shut out for just the second time this season.
Comets clobber Raiders in Iowa Star play
DUNKERTON — The BCLUW softball team scored 10 runs in the first two innings of its eventual 13-5 victory over Dunkerton (1-11) on Wednesday night.
The Comets (8-1) came out swinging, scoring six runs in the top of the first and four more in the second.
Raegan Crawford finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, while Eden Ladehoff was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Cassie Nason, Morgan Bergman and Savannah Moeller added two hits apiece, including a double for Bergman and two RBIs for Moeller.
Klayre Gallentine went the distance in the circle for BCLUW, allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Hendershot’s four-hitter propels Grundy Center
LA PORTE CITY — Maddy Hendershot pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Grundy Center softball team to a 6-0 victory over Union/G-R on Wednesday night.
Hendershot struck out seven and walked one in the win, allowing just four singles. Mallory Wrage, a Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior, had three of them for the host Knights (1-11).
Allison Koch and Kyndra Dieken had two hits apiece to lead Grundy Center (8-4). Evelyn Geerdes was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Lauren Zajac, singled in a run and scored twice.
DeSotel’s grand slam supports Siegert’s shutout
PRAIRIE CITY — The West Marshall baseball team piled up its eighth-straight win, walloping PCM 14-0 in five innings in Wednesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
Beckham DeSotel hit a grand slam in support of Evan Siegert’s first varsity start on the mound. DeSotel finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a grand slam, a sacrifice fly and two runs scored. AJ Dee was 2-for-2 with a double, two hit-by-pitches, an RBI and four runs scored.
DJ Ridout doubled, walked three times and drove in two runs, while Holden Simms singled, walked twice and scored three runs for the Trojans (10-5, 8-2).
Siegert needed just 73 pitches to get through five shutout innings against PCM (3-6, 3-4), allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four.
Cyclones chase off East Marshall baseball
DENVER — Host Denver’s fast start was more than the East Marshall baseball team could recover from as the Mustangs fell 11-5 in Wednesday’s North Iowa Cedar League matchup.
East Marshall got one run in the top of the first inning, but the Cyclones (9-3) scored five times in their first at-bat and never trailed again.
Jaxson Boswell doubled home a run to lead the East Marshall offense. Eli Burns and Blake Neuroth both had a hit, a run and an RBI, while Jackson Bidwell had an RBI single. Joryn Shively singled, walked twice and scored a run.
Starting pitcher Nathan Bowie took the loss for the Mustangs (4-8).
Rebel baseball tops Pirates in NICL slugfest
HUDSON — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team outscored Hudson 16-11 in Wednesday’s North Iowa Cedar League contest.
Drew Eilers was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Rebels (5-9), who had 16 hits. Trevor Mathern was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Hudson Clark, Treyvon Herron, Brandon Mathern and Austen Mathern had two hits apiece.
Brandon and Austen Mathern both doubled and scored twice, while Bennett Sieh singled, walked twice and scored three times against the Pirates (0-10).
Herron pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win, allowing seven runs — three earned — on five hits, six walks and two hit batsmen while striking out eight. Trevor Mathern gave up four unearned runs but got the final seven outs, striking out two.
Wolverines rough up Rockford in Iowa Star baseball
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team won for the second time in its last three games, rolling Rockford 14-4 in five innings here Wednesday night.
Rider Kupka was 1-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Brayton Davis was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and a run. Colin Teske finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a run scored.
Jacob Cornwell singled and drove in three runs, and winning pitcher Joaquin Williams added a hit for the Wolverines (2-6).
Quentin Peters picked up the loss for the visiting Warriors (0-8), who had just five hits.
Spartans forced to forfeit after defeating Union
LA PORTE CITY — The Grundy Center baseball team defeated Union Community on the scoreboard, but the Spartans were forced to forfeit the victory.
Class 2A No. 8 Grundy Center used an illegible pitcher during their 8-5 win over the host Knights (5-6) on Wednesday night, forfeiting the win for the Spartans (9-2). GC junior Britt Meyer, who threw 44 pitches in Monday’s loss to Dike-New Hartford, was not eligible to pitch against Union but threw 27 pitches in two innings of work.
Judd Jirovsky was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored for Grundy, while Ryker Thoren and Mason Thede had two hits apiece.
Hall’s no-hitter leads North Tama to triumph
CLARKSVILLE — Chaz Hall threw a four-inning no-hitter and the North Tama baseball team scored at least twice in each inning of Wednesday’s 15-0 romp over Clarksville (1-7) in Iowa Star Conference play.
Hall struck out four and walked four in the win, and the Redhawks supported him with 12 hits and five runs in each of their first two at-bats.
Kayler Morris, Kayvin Morris, Bryce Dostal, Gavin Rausch and Clayton Williams had two hits apiece for the Redhawks (7-4). Rausch doubled, scored three times and drove in four runs, while Williams doubled and drove in three.
Josh Dostal added a single, two runs scored and three RBIs.
