SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs split in Williamsburg tournament
WILLIAMSBURG — The Class 2A No. 5 East Marshall softball team went 1-1 at the Jim Turner Classic on Saturday, defeating Wapello and falling to No. 10 Durant.
The Mustangs (4-1) beat Wapello 8-0 behind the two-hitter pitching performance from Peyton Grabenbauer. She struck out six over four innings, allowing two singles and one walk for the win. Grabenbauer helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Leadoff batter Gianna Boswell did the same, hitting two doubles, while Vaeda Bryan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Ashtyn Wheater was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Delaney Ryan also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Libby Atcher hit an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.
Durant (4-1) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth to beat the Mustangs 3-1. The Wildcats got an RBI double from Allison Toft and a sacrifice fly by Kayley Schlapkohl to take the lead for good.
East Marshall got its lone run on four-straight singles by Makayla Hala, Ryan, Boswell and Miyah Grabenbauer.
Peyton Grabenbauer struck out four, walked three and hit a batter in the loss.
West Marshall softball goes 2-1 at Belle Plaine
BELLE PLAINE — The Class 3A No. 14 West Marshall softball team went 2-1 at the Belle Plaine Tournament on Saturday, taking down Woodward-Granger and the host Plainsmen before falling to Springville.
The Trojans (3-3) opened with a 2-0 win over Woodward-Granger, scoring solo runs in the second and sixth innings. Sophomore Aubree Greenwood scattered one hit and three walks for the win, striking out seven in six scoreless innings. Lily Zahnd finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Riley Randall and Taylor Thomas tallied RBIs.
West Marshall capitalized on 11 total walks issued by Belle Plaine pitching in a 14-0, four-inning win. The Trojans needed just four hits to score eight times in the second inning and six more in the third.
Jillian Karsjen and Savanna Davenport both had one hit and two runs scored for West Marshall. Eighth-grader Cailyn Brown struck out eight in a perfect game.
West Marshall nearly rallied all the way back from an 8-3 deficit against Springville (5-3) in an 8-7 loss.
Olivia Randall homered for the Trojans, who had seven hits. Thomas took the loss, allowing eight runs — four earned — on five hits and five walks over five innings, striking out seven. Brown struck out three of the four batters she faced in relief.
DeSotel’s walk-off hit delivers win for Trojans
STATE CENTER — Beckham DeSotel’s two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the West Marshall baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Des Moines Christian on Friday night at Schilling Field.
The Trojans (3-5) trailed 2-0 after four innings but fought back with a solo run in the fifth and two more in the seventh, snapping a four-game slide in the process.
It made a winner out of senior pitcher Vincent Clawson, who went the distance on the mound. He scattered seven hits and two earned runs against no walks and six strikeouts.
Holden Simms drove in West Marshall’s first run with a sacrifice fly, and DeSotel delivered in the Trojans’ last at-bat.
Rebels can’t keep pace with Dike-New Hartford
DIKE — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team couldn’t keep up with Dike-New Hartford in a 12-6 loss to the Wolverines in Friday’s cross-NICL clash.
The Rebels (2-3) were led by Brandon Mathern, who hit a two-run home run. Trevor Mathern was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Treyvon Herron and Hudson Clark each had a single.
Austen Mathern got the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out two.
Seven of Dike-New Hartford’s 18 hits went for extra-bases.
Redhawks give Spartans too much help
TRAER — The North Tama baseball team couldn’t overcome nine total walks issued in an 8-4 loss to Collins-Maxwell in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.
The visiting Spartans (3-3) coupled 12 hits with the nine free passes to overcome issuing nine walks of their own. North Tama (2-3) had just five hits, however, and fell below .500 for the first time this season.
Kayler Morris was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Josh Dostal and Chaz Hall both had a single and an RBI. Braydon Stickles singled and scored twice.
Bryce Dostal took the loss on the mound, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits and eight total walks over five innings pitched.
Carson Myers led C-M, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Bolts break late tie to beat BCLUW baseball
BEAMAN — Baxter broke a 7-all tie in the top of the seventh inning with the go-ahead run in an eventual 8-7 victory over the BCLUW baseball team on Friday night.
The host Comets (2-1) rallied back from a 7-2 deficit to tie the score in the sixth, but Baxter (3-1) got the tiebreaker in the seventh.
Daniel Zoske went the distance on the mound for BCLUW, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits, one walk and four hit batters while striking out three.
Maverick Grafke, Eathan Petermeier and Zoske had two hits apiece to lead the Comet offense. Petermeier and Kevin Hill scored two runs each, but BCLUW couldn’t take advantage of the 10 free passes issued by Baxter pitching.
Wolverines outlast Colo-NESCO for conference win
MC CALLSBURG — The GMG softball team scored its second Iowa Star Conference victory with a 4-3 triumph on Friday night at Colo-NESCO.
The Wolverines (2-1, 2-1) got a 13-strikeout showing from freshman pitcher Riah Boege, who allowed two hits and three unearned runs while walking four. Colo-NESCO’s No. 9 hitter Landrey Harris — an eighth-grader — had all of the Royals’ hits and scored two of three runs.
Taelyn Sash, Natalie Upah and Tatum Jones — all eighth-graders — each had a hit for the Wolverines, including an RBI double for Jones. Boege also had an RBI single, while Upah scored two runs.
BCLUW slams Baxter, 16-0, in Iowa Star softball
CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team improved 4-0 overall with a 16-0, three-inning beatdown of Baxter on Friday night.
The Comets scored 14 times in the bottom of the third to end the game early. BCLUW (4-0, 3-0) got 10 hits in the win, led by Klayre Gallentine going 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Raegan Crawford, Cassie Nason and Allison Ward had two hits apiece, including a double for Nason.
Gallentine also earned the win in the pitching circle, scattering four hits and one walk against three strikeouts.
No. 11 Collins-Maxwell turns back Redhawks
TRAER — The North Tama softball team suffered a 14-4, five-inning loss to Class 1A No. 11 Collins-Maxwell on Friday evening.
The visiting Spartans (3-0) racked up 14 hits in the win, led by Adelie Kane’s 3-for-4 performance that included a double and three RBIs.
North Tama (1-2) got four hits, highlighted by a three-run home run for Addison Hochstetler. Gabriella Seda hit a double, while Faith Dvorak and Violet Seda added singles.
Hochstetler took the loss in the pitching circle, walking three while striking out three.
