SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall hits three homers in rout of South Hamilton

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team hit three home runs on its way to a 16-0, four-inning victory over South Hamilton in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest at Schilling Field.

Hunter Polley and Evan Siegert combined on a no-hitter, each tossing two innings. Polley walked two and hit two batters but struck out four, and Siegert struck out three in relief.

Holden Simms went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a dinger, three runs scored and four RBIS. Beckham DeSotel was 2-for-2 with a double, a homer, two runs and five RBIs, while DJ Ridout was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs.

Wolverine baseball winless after falling to Baxter

BAXTER — The GMG baseball team remained winless after an 11-1, four-inning defeat at the hands of Baxter on Monday in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

The Wolverines got their lone run in the top of the fourth, but Baxter (4-1, 3-1) ended the game with two runs in the bottom half.

Jacob Cornwell, Joaquin Williams and Rider Kupka each had a hit for GMG (0-5, 0-4), with Williams driving in Ethan Klemesrud as the team’s lone run. Brayton Davis took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs on seven hits over three innings.

Trojans take care of Hawks in HOIAC softball

STATE CENTER — The Class 3A No. 14 West Marshall softball team stifled South Hamilton behind a one-hitter from sophomore pitcher Aubree Greenwood, hammering the Hawks 10-0 in four innings here Monday night.

Greenwood struck out eight and walked none, and the West Marshall defense didn’t make an error behind her.

Riley Randall racked up three of the Trojans’ 14 hits, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Lillian Fisher was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Lily Zahnd went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Leadoff batter Jillian Karsjen was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and two RBIs, and Taylor Thomas went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

West Marshall (4-3, 2-1) visits Roland-Story on Wednesday night.

Boege’s one-hitter helps GMG softball beat Bolts

BAXTER — The GMG softball team improved to 3-1 with Monday’s 9-0, five-inning triumph over Baxter in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

The Wolverines (3-1, 3-1) broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to hand the host Bolts (0-4, 0-4) their fourth loss in as many games.

GMG freshman pitcher Riah Boege twirled a one-hit shutout while striking out 12 and walking none in the complete-game performance.

The Wolverines needed just four hits to score their nine runs as Baxter pitching issued eight walks. Taelyn Sash was 2-for-3 to lead GMG, while Natalie Upah and Bryleigh Bartel both added a single in the win.

Royals rally past Redhawks in Iowa Star softball

TRAER — Colo-NESCO overcame a three-run deficit with a four-run final at-bat to beat the North Tama softball team 13-12 in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

North Tama (1-3, 1-3) took a 12-9 lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Colo-NESCO (2-3, 1-3) came back to take the lead and then held the Redhawks scoreless in the home half of the seventh.

Addison Hochstetler homered for the second game in a row to lead North Tama, going 3-for-5 with a double, a homer and five RBIs. Faith Dvorak, Lily Sell and Morgan Meek each had two hits, including a triple for Dvorak. Meek drove in four runs.

Hochstetler took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 earned runs on 15 hits and six walks while striking out four.

Colo-NESCO relief pitcher Julie Banks allowed one unearned run in getting the final six outs for the win. Jadyn Niemeyer had four hits to lead the Royals.
