SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall wallops pair at Brent Prange Classic
ALLEMAN — The West Marshall baseball team battered a pair of opponents on Saturday in the Brent Prange Classic, beating Riverside 15-0 and Sioux Central 19-5 in two run-rule-shortened games.
The Trojans (18-8) walloped Riverside in their first game of the day, getting a one-hit shutout from Evan Siegert and 13 hits on offense. West Marshall had six extra-base hits, including four triples, and cashed in on six total walks issued by the Bulldogs (3-17).
In four innings on the mound, Siegert faced only two more than the minimum, allowing one single and one walk. He struck out three.
Caden Pfantz, Noah DeSotel, DJ Ridout and Beckham DeSotel had two hits apiece to lead the Trojan bats. Noah DeSotel had a triple, an RBI and three runs scored, while Beckham DeSotel hit two triples, scored twice and drove in a run.
Sophomores Karver Christensen and Blayk Hart got their first career hits as well.
Against Sioux Central, West Marshall piled up 19 hits and scored 10 runs over the final two frames. Christensen got the win, allowing one run on five hits and five total walks over four innings, striking out three. Ridout closed it out with three innings of one-run ball, giving up one hit and two total walks while striking out five.
Pfantz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Trojans. Dawson Bear was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run and four RBIs, while Ridout was 2-for-4 with a triple and a three-run home run. Holden Simms finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and three RBIs.
Kinnick Geers and Turner DeRossett got their first career hits in this game.
GMG baseball beats back Moulton-Udell
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team scored in four of its six at-bats to beat Moulton-Udell on Saturday in non-conference play.
The Wolverines (7-11) led 3-0 before Moulton-Udell got back to within one in the fourth. GMG responded with a three-spot in the home half of the inning and held off the Eagles (2-13) the rest of the way.
Grady Dieleman and Rider Kupka had two hits apiece to lead GMG offensively. Dieleman doubled and scored twice, while Kupka scored two runs. Easton Sash was 1-for-1 with two walks, an RBI and a run, while Colton Hauser was 1-for-2 with a run. Colin Teske had an RBI single, while Brayton Davis and Jacob Cornwell both drove in a run.
Joaquin Williams earned the pitching win for the Wolverines.
East, West Marshall go 2-0 on Friday at Don Bosco Tourney
GILBERTVILLE — The East Marshall and West Marshall softball teams both went 2-0 on the first day of the Don Bosco Tournament on Friday.
Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall defeated Riceville, 9-4, and then downed the host Dons, 7-2. West Marshall won a pair of low-scoring affairs, topping Waverly-Shell Rock, 4-3, and Maquoketa, 4-2.
The Mustangs (18-7) hammered out 15 hits against Riceville, with Makayla Hala going 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the way. Ashtyn Wheater went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs, and Peyton Grabenbauer was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Grabenbauer got the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.
Wheater had another three hits, including a triple, in the Mustangs’ win over Don Bosco. She scored once and drove in two runs. Bailey Grant, Taylor Halverson and Delaney Ryan added two hits apiece.
Grabenbauer got the win in relief as well, allowing just one hit over 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three. Halverson pitched 4 1/3 frames, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
West Marshall (17-8) had to rally from behind in both games. Against Waverly-Shell Rock, Lillian Fischer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Amelia Ranson was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs.
Aubree Greenwood allowed two earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four.
The Trojans scored the last four runs to overtake Maquoketa in Friday’s finale. Ranson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Fischer hit an RBI triple. Jillian Karsjen was 1-for-3 with a run, and Rachel Randall singled and walked twice.
Eighth-grader Cailyn Brown pitched all five innings (time limit) for the win, allowing two runs on two hits and six total walks, striking out one.
Wolverines bury Bolts for Iowa Star South victory
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG softball team broke a 3-all tie with six unanswered runs to topple Baxter 9-3 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.
The Wolverines (10-8, 8-7) led 3-0 before Baxter (1-18, 1-13) scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to draw even. GMG got three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put away the conference win.
GMG pitcher Riah Boege struck out 15 in the win, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks. Her batterymate, freshman catcher Skyler Murty, propeled the offense by going 4-for-4 with a double, a run and four RBIs.
Addison Elmore was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs and two RBIs, while Natalie Upah and Taelyn Sash both singled and scored twice. Boege and Madison Bryant both chipped in singles.
BCLUW baseball clinches share of Iowa Star South crown
BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team clinched at least a share of the Iowa Star Conference’s South Division title by beating Collins-Maxwell 7-5 on Friday night.
BCLUW (10-5, 10-4) scored five times in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead that Collins-Maxwell (8-11, 7-8) erased with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The Comets broke the 5-all tie with a run in the home half and another in the sixth to seal the win.
Daniel Zoske pitched for the win for the Comets. No other statistics were available as of press time.
Trojans topple Mustangs in Marshall County clash
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team jumped out to a big lead and held off East Marshall for a 7-2, non-conference victory on Friday night at Schilling Field.
The Trojans (16-8) led 7-0 after three innings but didn’t score again, and East Marshall scratched out single runs in the sixth and seventh frames.
West Marshall leadoff hitter AJ Dee went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Dawson Bear went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Evan Siegert and Holden Simms both singled and scored, while Beckham DeSotel had an RBI single.
Hunter Polley pitched six innings for the win, allowing two runs — one earned — on five hits and six walks while striking out eight. DeSotel walked two and struck out two in the seventh to close it out.
Blake Neuroth was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead East Marshall (9-12). Jackson Busch doubled, while Jaxson Boswell and Jackson Bidwell each hit a single. Landen Daugherty drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Joryn Shively took the loss, allowing seven runs — four earned — on five hits and three total walks, striking out two. Parker Nissen pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief.
Redhawks overtake Colo-NESCO for conference win
ZEARING — The North Tama baseball team did its damage with a five-run fourth inning on its way to a 6-3 triumph over Colo-NESCO in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash at Duane Newton Field.
The Redhawks (11-8, 9-6) trailed 2-0 before scoring five times in the fourth and once more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.
North Tama made the most out of just four hits, capitalizing on nine total walks issued by Royals pitching. Josh Dostal was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Gavin Rausch was 1-for-2 with two hit-by-pitches and two runs scored. Kayler Morris and Braydon Stickles both singled and scored.
Dostal pitched four innings for the win, allowing three runs — two earned — on two hits and three total walks, striking out five. Bryce Dostal allowed one hit and three total walks over three innings for the save, striking out five.
Hunter Purvis had two hits to lead Colo-NESCO (6-12, 4-11).
