MCC names Sowers as new athletic director

Whitney Sowers

Marshalltown Community College announced on Thursday the appointment of Whitney Sowers as its new athletic director beginning August 4.

Sowers brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of collegiate athletics to her new role. She was a standout softball player at Central College in Pella, where she played under legendary coach George Wares, the winningest softball coach in NCAA Division III history.

After earning her bachelor’s degree from Central, Sowers continued her education at Concordia University Irvine, receiving a Master’s in athletic administration and coaching.

Since 2017, Sowers has served as co-head softball coach at Millikin University in Illinois, where she helped guide the program to significant success. Her commitment to student-athlete well-being extends beyond the field, as evidenced by her involvement in various leadership roles at Millikin. She served on the Millikin University Staff Advisory Council, managed the Millikin University Big Blue Campus Store, and acted as the Millikin University SAAC Advisor.

“I am incredibly excited to return to Marshalltown and take this next step in my athletic leadership journey at MCC,” said Sowers. “I look forward to working alongside the coaches as we strive to enhance the student experience. Our goal is to shape well-rounded individuals by prioritizing academic performance, personal growth, and athletic excellence. Together with our dedicated coaching staff, we will build immense pride in MCC’s athletic programs.”

Dr. Matt Schmit, MCC Provost, expressed his enthusiasm for Sowers’ appointment.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Whitney Sowers back to Marshalltown and into this vital role at MCC,” he said. “Her impressive background as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator, combined with her deep roots in our community, make her the ideal person to lead our athletic department.

“We are confident that her dedication to developing the whole student, both academically and athletically, will elevate our programs and inspire our Tigers.”

Sowers, a Marshalltown native, will take over from current men’s basketball coach Ryan Flack, who has been serving as athletic director. Sowers is a 2011 MHS graduate.

Starting at $4.38/week.
