Trojan softball toppled by Comets

WEST LIBERTY — Seventh-ranked West Liberty scored three times in its first at-bat en route to a 7-2 victory over West Marshall in Tuesday’s Class 3A Region 7 softball championship game.

The visiting Trojans (23-11) scratched out solo runs in the third and fourth innings, but West Liberty (22-7) finished them off with three more runs in the fourth.

The Comets outhit West Marshall 7-5 and used five free bases to their advantage. The Trojans pitched around West Liberty slugger Pearson Hall, walking her three times, but she came around to score twice in the win.

Kiley Collins finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Sully Hall went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead West Liberty.

Four of seven runs came earned to West Marshall hurler Aubree Greenwood, who struck out three. The Trojans committed four errors.

The Comets’ Mallory Wulf allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out three.

Lillian Fischer doubled, while Rachel Randall, Riley Randall, Olivia Randall and Greenwood each hit singles. Runners Hattie McCollom and Savanna Davenport scored West Marshall’s runs, and Greenwood had the team’s lone RBI.

West Liberty gets the No. 5 seed for next week’s state tournament and will face No. 4 PCM (25-4) in Monday’s quarterfinals.
