Bobcat boys golf begins by doubling up at North

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ golf team made a mockery out of its modest scoring goal to start the season.

The Bobcats got four scores of 81 or better to beat Fort Dodge and Des Moines North in an Iowa Alliance Conference triangular to open the season Thursday at Bright Grandview Golf Course, shooting a 308 to start the fall campaign.

Fort Dodge finished in at 342 and host North was another 100 strokes behind at 442.

Sophomores Joe Greazel and Gavin Misek led Marshalltown in the opening meet, finishing as medalist and runner-up with respective scores of 70 and 76.

“For the first meet we can take a lot of positives away from today,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “Joe Greazel played a very steady round of golf that could have been much lower if he’d gotten just a few more putts to drop. He set himself up with a ton of birdie looks and had some nice up-and-downs to save par.

“Gavin Misek shooting 76 in his first varsity meet shows just how far he’s come in the last year. He had a hot front nine, going out in (2-over-par) 36 and did a nice job limiting the damage when he got into trouble.”

Juniors Parker Christen and Jacob Seberger both shot 81 to round out the Bobcats’ scoring rounds. Sophomores Bryson Payne and Korben McKibben shot 91 and 98, respectively, and senior Trae Misek carded a 92 as well.

“Jacob Seberger and Parker Christen had similiar rounds in that they both got off to slow starts on the front nine and then brought it back on the inward nine, shooting 36 and 38 respectively,” Johnson said. “As a coach, you love to see that bounce-back, especially early in the season.”

Marshalltown was originally scheduled to face Ottumwa and Waterloo East on Monday at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo, but that meet has since been canceled. The Bobcats return to action on Thursday, Aug. 21, with a home triangular against Ames and Des Moines Roosevelt at Elmwood Country Club.

Starting at $4.38/week.
