Three days after suffering a shorthanded defeat to Southeast Polk, the Marshalltown girls’ tennis team turned things around on the Rams.

The Bobcats swept all six singles matches to cinch the victory, and then finished with a 10-1 triumph in their quest for revenge from Friday’s Hawkette Invite in Ankeny.

Marshalltown, without a handful of regular starters, suffered a 7-4 setback to Southeast Polk in a contest consisting entirely of single pro sets. The Rams gained the upper hand on Friday, but the Bobcats ripped it away from them on Monday at the Marshalltown Court Complex.

“A 10-1 victory is awesome,” said MHS head coach James Christensen. “We played pretty well down in Ankeny. the girls that needed to step up played really hard and we lost a couple close matches late.

“The girls really wanted to play [Southeast Polk] again and I was really glad that we got the chance. They came out and executed really well.”

Marshalltown (7-4) claimed the win straightaway through singles play, picking up five straight-set victories to go with one three-set super-tiebreaker. Kaelyn Coleman rallied from behind to get a 3-6, 6-2, (10-5) triumph at No. 5 singles, and Emily Diggins finished off a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 6 to help push the Bobcats over the top.

Coleman and No. 3 doubles partner Hanna Osgood were the last Bobcats on the court, fighting back from behind to pick up a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, (10-7) victory to finish off the dual in fashion. The rest of the MHS girls’ tennis players gathered around to cheer on their teammates to victory, even though the contest didn’t impact the final tally.

“That’s a big thing in a culture of supporting each other as a team, sticking around to the end,” Christensen said. “The girls could tell their teammates had their back, and I think it gives them that extra little boost after a long night of tennis.”

Coleman was a part of two three-set triumphs, coming back from down a set both times.

“We had some ups and downs here and there, but Kaelyn Coleman for example, going to a couple of super tiebreakers and coming out victorious in both of them, that’s huge for her moving forward. Winning clutch points is not something I expect from somebody playing their first year of varsity.”

Also collecting straight-set singles wins were Kate Sandvick at No. 1, Ellie Downs at No. 2, Jorja Janssen at No. 3 and Lilyia Christen at No. 4. Sandvick and Downs improved to 5-1 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jordan Evans and Kadie Cech, while Janssen and Christen captured a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Audra Doty and Emily Wall.

Trista Bratland and Ellison Wittkop came away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 doubles to improve to 6-3 this season. Taylor Bear and Ciomara Villela sustained the Bobcats’ lone loss, falling 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 doubles.

“Play-wise, the girls are making strikes that I thought might be an offseason thing, to be perfectly honest,” Christensen said, “but they’re doing it right now in season. It’s tough to fly the plane as you’re building it, but the girls are getting it done and we haven’t had a lot of practice time.”

Marshalltown will have four practice days in a row before returning to action next Tuesday with a trip to Des Moines Roosevelt for an Iowa Alliance Conference dual at the McCollum Waveland Tennis Complex.
