1-2 finish powers Bobcat harriers at Kirk Schmaltz Invite

AMES — Marshalltown junior Preston Johnson set a new meet and course record in winning Thursday’s 57th Kirk Schmaltz Invitational, leading the Bobcats to a ninth-place finish on Thursday at the Iowa State University Cross Country Course.
Johnson’s record-setting run was at the front of a 1-2 finish for the Bobcats, as senior Carter Nunn broke the 16-minute barrier for the first time to earn the silver medal.
Johnson led the 96-runner race with a winning time of 14 minutes, 55.5 seconds, while Nunn clocked in at 15:32.3 to hold off the rest of the chase pack. Norwalk’s Teegan Kralik was third at 15:35.1, as runners 3-6 all finished within seven seconds of Nunn.
As a team, the Bobcats scored 240 points to finish ninth out of 14 squads in attendance. Waukee Northwest edged out Ankeny Centennial, 80-82, to take the team title, while Norwalk was third with 97.
Marshalltown freshman Costin Piscitelli was the third scoring runner for his team, taking 72nd place with a final time of 18:05.0. Sophomore Michael Downs was 78th in 18:25.9, and Thomas Stanley rounded out the scoring effort by taking 87th in 18:54.7.
Kade Randall, a senior, ran 19:20.1 for 89th place as well for MHS.
The Marshalltown girls finished 12th out of as many scoring teams with a 363 total, led by senior Anessa Morrison in 64th place with a time of 21:27.8. Bobcat freshman Grace Whitmore wasn’t far behind, finishing in 21:41.6 for 66th place. Fellow freshman Lily Johnson placed 74th in 22:27.1; sophomore Mallory Meyeraan was 78th in 22:13.8; and freshman Airi Hoven was 82nd in 24:47.4.
Sophia Valdez Chavez, a junior, took 83rd in 25:12.3 but didn’t count toward the final team score.
Waukee Northwest won the meet with 57 total points, followed by Ankeny Centennial (66) and Norwalk (137). Ankeny senior Makenna Madetzke was the individual medalist at 17:56.8, just ahead of Ankeny Centennial freshman Rebecca Flick (17:58.6).
