Bobcat swimmers won’t be stopped by Warriors

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving squad improved to 4-0 with Thursday’s 107-77 victory over host Cedar Rapids Washington.

This marked the closest contest of the season for the Bobcats, who had won their previous three meets by at least 50 points.

Marshalltown still made it look easy, winning nine of 12 events and easing to the finish line with the non-conference victory.

Drea Ceren and Leia Hernandez were the Bobcats’ top point-getters on the night as both were a part of four event victories. Ceren won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races and was on the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Hernandez claimed the 100 and 200 freestyle events and was on both winning freestyle relays as well.

Ceren won the shortest race of the day — the 50 free — with a time of 27.80 seconds, and she took the longest event — the 500 free — in 6:03.46. Hernandez won the 100 in 57.41 and the 200 in 2:06.18.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Rachel Case, Adele Beek, Ceren and Hernandez totaled a time of 1:48.82 to edge the host Warriors by 26 hundredths of a second. The 400 free relay foursome of Ceren, Hernandez, Addison Elmore and Emma Case finished with a two-second cushion over Washington at 4:07.44.

Harlie Thatcher won the diving competition with a point total of 189.75, while Ella DeMonte was third with a 160.6.

Beek won the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.1 and teamed with Elmore, Emma Case and Rachel Case to claim the 200 medley relay in 2:03.16. Cedar Rapids Washington was nine seconds back of the Bobcats in that first race of the meet.

Marshalltown is back in its home pool on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. dual with Des Moines Roosevelt.

Starting at $4.38/week.
