MCC men’s soccer falls in conference opener

The Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team suffered defeat in Saturday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference opener, falling 4-2 to Columbus (Neb.) CC.

The Tigers (2-4-1, 0-1-0) fell behind by two goals in the first half and never got back to even the rest of the way.

The visiting Raiders (5-3-1, 1-0-0) outshot MCC 22-10 and got 11 shots on net against Tim Albrecht, who made seven saves. Central’s Logan Flores stopped 3-of-5 shots on net for the win.

Kristof Nemeth and Harvey Brook scored to give Columbus a 2-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first half, but MCC’s Ricardo Paiva put the Tigers on the board in the 44th minute.

Nemeth scored again less than two minutes into the second half, but MCC retaliated again. Uweso Ferasi scored on an assist from Augustus Gruber to get the Tigers within 3-2 with 25 minutes left to play.

Columbus regained its two-goal lead on a tally from Juan Lopez in the 74th minute, providing the final score.

MCC goes back on the road Wednesday with an ICCAC match against Southeastern in West Burlington.
