Spartans shine atop local teams at Sam Iverson Invite

GRUNDY CENTER — Emerson Vokes won the individual title at the Sam Iverson Invitational in leading the Grundy Center boys’ cross country team to second place at its own meet Thursday at Town & Country Golf Club.

The Spartans scored 107 points to trail only Jesup (42) in the 18-team meet.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck finished last out of 13 scoring teams (244), led by freshman Caleb Pifkin in eighth place. Pifkin paced the Rebels with a time of 18:40.

Vokes won comfortably in 16:14, well ahead of runner-up Will Nesbit from Jesup (17:03). The Spartans also got top-10 finishes from Jayce Fryslie (18:07) in sixth and Leo Block (18:42) in ninth. G-R’s Caleb Bowser finished 16th in 19:20.

BCLUW got back-to-back finishes from Tommy Hinderhofer and Garrett Brunner at 19-20, clocking in at 19:34 and 19:41, respectively, with teammate Olin Hupfeld not far behind in 27th (20:14).

GMG was led by Brayton Davis in 21st (19:46), while Henry Dieleman took 33rd (20:39). North Tama’s Andrew Beenken was 42nd overall (21:08).

On the girls’ side, Grundy Center got a pair of top-10 finishes to take third place out of 15 teams. A close race at the top saw Sumner-Fredericksburg emerge with first place with 74 points, followed by Jesup (81) and the host Spartans (87).

Grace Storjohann led the charge for Grundy in third place (20:22), while Evelyn Geerdes was eighth in 21:40. Maddy Hendershot came away with 20th place (22:40), followed by Karlee Lynch (23:02) in 26th and Addy Hendershot (23:17) in 31st.

North Tama’s Rachael Murty garnered a medal for finishing 10th in 21:51, while teammate Shawna Cibula tracked down 22nd place in 22:50. The Redhawks were ninth out of 11 scoring teams with 174 points.

Chloe Switzer scored 27th place to lead BCLUW (23:06), while Grace Mathern was 51st to pace GMG (24:28).
