SPORTS SHORTS: Comets chase off Baxter in Iowa Star Volleyball
BAXTER — The Class 1A No. 7 BCLUW volleyball team returned to the court for the first time in a week, walloping Baxter 3-0 in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.
The Comets (10-1, 2-1) played their first match since their first loss — a 3-2 setback to North Tama — and handled Baxter 25-15, 25-12, 25-11.
BCLUW got kills from 10 different players, led by Kennedy Davis with eight. Layla Follett, Grace Farnsworth and Raine Sireno had five kills apiece, and setter Sally Ramirez finished with 21 assists.
Brinna Benson led the defense with 18 digs, while Davis was 11-for-11 serving with five of the team’s 15 aces against the host Bolts (2-8, 1-1). Ainsley Geelhart served 11-for-11 with four aces for the Comets, who play Saturday in the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tournament.
West Marshall netters get first Heart of Iowa win
PERRY — The West Marshall volleyball team logged its first Heart of Iowa Conference win with a 3-1 victory over host Perry on Thursday night.
Arya Wertz led the Trojans (3-10, 1-1) with 15 kills on the night. Jordan Hilleman added eight kills, Elyse Ranson had seven kills and Olivia Henderson chipped in five kills. Makaylie Tarbell totaled 28 assists and Riley Randall chipped in eight more.
Randall led the defense with 22 digs, while Ranson, Tarbell and Wertz each had a block. Tarbell also served 19-for-20 with four aces, while Henderson was 16-for-18 with four of West Marshall’s 15 aces against the winless Jayettes (0-12, 0-3).
MCC volleyball’s comeback comes up short
ESTHERVILLE — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team rallied up a comeback but couldn’t complete it in a 3-2 loss to Iowa Lakes on Wednesday night.
The host Lakers (6-11, 1-3) claimed the first two sets of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference contest, but Marshalltown (1-5, 1-4) rallied back for the next two sets. Iowa Lakes got the upper hand in the fifth and deciding set to prevail 25-18, 25-14, 18-25, 23-25, 15-7.
MCC sophomores Kaylee LaPlant and Imigyn Stratton both came away with career-highs for kills, leading the Tigers with 19 and 14, respectively. Violet Hougland added seven kills while setter Addy Stull finished with 20 assists as well as four kills. Olivia Maddux added 19 assists.
Sophomore libero Callie Swanson led the MCC defense with 26 digs, Stull had 21 and Stratton 17. Hougland had two solo blocks and Maddux added another.
Iowa Lakes was led by Brooke White with 21 kills, 29 digs and three of the Lakers’ 11 service aces.
