SPORTS SHORTS: Comets fall to ACA in Dunkerton title bout

DUNKERTON — The Class 1A No. 7 BCLUW volleyball team came up one set short of a Dunkerton Tournament title on Saturday, falling in a three-set thriller to Ankeny Christian Academy in the championship match.

The Comets (20-4) went 5-1 on the day with three wins over ranked 1A teams, including a pool-play victory over 11th-ranked Ankeny Christian. BCLUW swept Oelwein (21-14, 21-16), Vinton-Shellsburg (21-9, 21-11), ACA (21-19, 21-19) and No. 15 Cedar Ridge Christian (24-22, 21-11) before fighting past No. 13 Dunkerton (22-20, 18-21, 16-14).

In the championship match, ACA got its revenge, 20-22, 22-20, 15-12.

BCLUW was led on the day by Grace Farnsworth, who had 55 kills and seven blocks to go with 21 digs. She served 43-of-47 with six aces as well. Olivia Peters piled up 42 kills and 26 digs, serving 42-for-44 with five aces. Kennedy Davis and Kylie Pekarek contributed 13 kills apiece, while Davis had seven blocks and served 40-for-46 with seven aces.

Sophomore setter Cambria Wayman tallied 73 assists, 18 digs, and served 50-for-52 with five aces. Sally Ramirez chipped in 33 assists, 13 digs and 26-of-28 serving with an ace, while Brinna Benson totaled 53 digs and 33-for-34 serving with three aces.

Mustangs finish with a win at STC tourney

TAMA — The East Marshall volleyball team exacted some revenge with a win in its final match of the South Tama Tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs (10-15) went 1-3 on the day, closing with a straight-set win over Belle Plaine after having fallen to the Plainsmen earlier in the tournament. East Marshall opened with three-set losses to eventual champion South Tama (17-21, 21-17, 15-10) and Belle Plaine (21-19, 10-21, 15-6) before getting swept by Lisbon (21-11, 21-17). The day ended with a win, beating Belle Plaine 21-13, 21-13.

East Marshall was led by Ashtyn Wheater with 17 kills and four blocks. She also served 21-for-22 with four aces. Marisa Cahalan contributed 14 kills, 15 digs and eight service aces, while Alivia Neuroth had 12 kills, 17 digs and 29-of-32 serving with nine aces.

Junior setter Mya Gould racked up 49 assists to go with 16 digs and 35-of-36 serving with two aces. Junior libero Libby Atcher tallied a team-high 33 digs to go with 24-of-27 serving and five aces. Kiela Wolf chipped in eight kills and two blocks, and Natalie Condon added seven kills and two blocks.

West Marshall blanked by Nevada tourney competition

NEVADA — The West Marshall volleyball team was unable to collect a set at the Nevada Tournament, suffering an 0-4 showing on the day.

The Trojans (4-19) were swept by Ballard (21-8, 21-15), Council Bluffs Lewis Central (21-14, 21-13), Dallas Center-Grimes (21-8, 21-10) and Winterset (21-16, 21-14).

West Marshall was led on the day by senior Arya Wertz, who totaled 12 kills and three blocks. Jordan Hilleman had eight kills and served 16-for-16 with one ace, while Ellie Andrews added five kills and one block. Sophomore setter Makaylie Tarbell totaled 24 assists and 10 digs to go with four kills and 18-of-19 serving. Evalyn Clark added three kills.

Riley Randall piled up 40 digs while serving 20-for-21 with an ace, while Olivia Henderson had 13 digs and served a perfect 25-of-25 with two aces.

MCC volleyball squad sweeps past John Wood

QUINCY, Ill. — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a three-set sweep over John Wood CC on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers (2-6) battled to the bitter end for a 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the host Blazers.

MCC finished the day with a .234 hitting efficiency, led by Morghan Harvey’s 11 kills and only two errors on 31 swings (.290). Violet Hougland finished with seven kills and a .211 hitting percentage, while Kaylee LaPlant had eight kills and a .333 hitting efficiency. Imigyn Stratton chipped in with four kills.

Addy Stull tallied 19 assists and Olivia Maddux had seven more.

Harvey, Maddux and sophomore libero Callie Swanson led the Tigers with 12 digs apiece, and Stratton added 11. Hougland and Stratton led the team with three blocks apiece.

MCC is back out on the road Tuesday with a match against NIACC in Mason City.

Tigers snap three-game skid at Northwest Iowa

SHELDON — The Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer squad halted a three-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over Northwest Iowa CC on Saturday in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play.

The Tigers (3-5-1, 1-2-0) broke a 1-all tie with two goals in an eight-minute span late in the second half, both assisted by Ricardo Paiva. Haru Takizawa tallied the tiebreaking goal in the 72nd minute, and Uweso Ferasi gave MCC a two-goal cushion with his score in the 80th minute.

Matoi Yanagisawa gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead by convering a penalty kick 20 minutes into the match. Warren Traina pulled Northwest Iowa (1-5, 0-3) back to even in the 57th minute.

Tim Albrecht made two saves for the win, while MCC sent 10 shots on goal against Thunder goalkeeper Jamie Skivington.

The Tigers are back home on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. match against Iowa Central.
