SPORTS SHORTS: MCC men’s soccer succumbs to Southeastern
BURLINGTON — The Southeastern Community College men’s soccer team scored the last two goals to break a 1-all tie and defeat Marshalltown CC by a 3-1 score on Wednesday at the Burlington Rec Plex.
The host Blackhawks (6-2-1, 2-0-0) claimed their fourth-straight win in the process, pulling away from a 1-1 tie after 21 minutes of play. Louey Franks gave Southeastern a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute of the match, but MCC drew back to even with a goal by Ran Inosake in the 21st.
Tomas Raposo tallied before the end of the first half to put Southeastern up 2-1, and an own-goal in the second half spelled the end for Marshalltown (2-5-1, 0-2-0).
The Tigers remain on the road for their next Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash, traveling to face Northwest Iowa CC on Saturday in Sheldon.
West Marshall girls win own cross country meet
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ cross country team won its own invitational on Tuesday night at Lincoln Valley Golf Course, with all five scoring runners finishing in the top-12.
The Trojans totaled 34 points to fight off five teams, including runner-up Lynnville-Sully (55) and Collins-Maxwell (57).
Senior Addie Thompson led West Marshall with a runner-up finish, clocking 19 minutes, 48 seconds to trail only Jayden Peters of Collins-Maxwell (19:41).
Dalaney Eldridge took seventh for the Trojans in 20:48, while freshmen Kielly Kasal (21:22), Zoey Wignall (21:26) and Ella Randall (21:29) finished 10-12.
On the boys’ side, West Marshall finished fifth out of eight scoring teams with 127 points. Ankeny Christian took the team title with 39 points, followed by Lynnville-Sully (63) and Baxter (87).
The host Trojans were led by Erick Rosas-Canchola in 19th place (18:49), followed by Aaron Greene (19:16) in 22nd, Joseph Swigart in 29th (19:51), Jacob Eirikson in 30th (20:03) and Ryan Putney in 34th (20:50).
Alex Davis of Ankeny Christian won the individual gold in a time of 16:34.
Mustang boys take title at E-B-F Invitational
EDDYVILLE — The East Marshall boys’ cross country team won the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Invitational on Tuesday night, scoring five runners in the top 10.
The Mustangs totaled 33 points to lead the five-team field, followed by Montezuma (59), Cardinal (71), host E-B-F (93) and Southeast Warren (109).
Austin Pansegrau paced East Marshall by finishing third in 19 minutes, 31 seconds, and Curtis Chandler was fourth in 19:47. Cael Curphy came in seventh in 20:25, Maddux Bennett was ninth in 20:29, and Lars Dommer was 10th in 20:30. The Mustangs’ Landen Shoeman was next across the finish line as well in 11th (20:31).
The East Marshall girls had just four runners for Tuesday’s meet and didn’t factor into the team scoring. The Mustangs got a top-10 finish from Abby Hendricks, who came in ninth in 24:47. Ava Hendricks was 12th in 25:08, while Faith Pardekooper (28:22) and Hayden Braye (28:23) finished 21st and 22nd, respectively.
Local teams compete at Belle Plaine Invite
BELLE PLAINE — Gladbrook-Reinbeck freshman Caleb Pifkin took fourth place at the Belle Plaine Invitational cross country meet on Tuesday at Franklin Park
Pifkin clocked in at 19 minutes, 52 seconds, to lead the Rebels to a fifth-place finish with 104 team points. Meskwaki was sixth with 117 points in the seven-team meet.
GMG’s Brayton Davis was the area’s next finisher, placing seventh in 19:42, and G-R’s Caleb Bowser was 10th in 20:27.
Meskwaki was led by Emery Roberts in 14th place (21:00).
English Valleys won the team title with 38 points, while Sigourney’s Troy Klett came in ahead of the field in 17:40.
On the girls’ side, Meskwaki’s Bree Scabbyrobe claimed eighth place to lead all local runners with a time of 23:25. GMG’s Grace Mathern just missed a top-10 finish, taking 11th in 24:29.
Meskwaki’s Dorothy Bear placed 13th in 25:02, and GMG’s Taelyn Sash was 16th in 26:01.
Katelyn Monaghan, Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s lone runner, was 31st (35:37).
East Marshall volleyball defeated in divisional play
GRUNDY CENTER — The East Marshall volleyball team suffered its 38th straight NICL West Division defeat, falling 3-0 to Class 2A No. 4 Grundy Center on Tuesday.
The Mustangs (9-12, 0-4) finished winless in conference play for the eighth year in a row, falling 25-8, 25-11, 25-8.
Natalie Condon led East Marshall with six kills on just 10 swings, while Mya Gould finished with eight assists. Ashtyn Wheater made 12 digs while Alivia Neuroth and Libby Atcher had seven apiece. Wheater served 6-for-6, while Neuroth and Atcher both were 4-for-5 with one ace each.
Grundy Center (20-3, 3-0) was led by Ryanne Brubaker’s 16 kills and five blocks. The Spartans served up 14 aces.
Trojan netters take care of Saydel in 3-0 sweep
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall volleyball team tallied its second Heart of Iowa Conference win by sweeping Saydel on Monday night, 25-16, 27-25, 25-13.
Arya Wertz and Jordan Hilleman led the host Trojans (4-15, 2-2) with seven kills apiece, and Ellie Andrews added six kills. Elyse Ranson pitched in with four kills, and Makaylie Tarbell finished with 12 assists.
Hilleman had a team-leading 15 digs, Riley Randall had 14, and Olivia Henderson added 11. Henderson and Wertz had one block apiece to help West Marshall defeat the Eagles (1-9, 0-5).
Hilleman served 17-for-18 with three of the Trojans’ 12 aces. Henderson was 10-for-11 with three aces, while Wertz was 14-for-14 with two aces.
