SPORTS SHORTS: Thompson leads Trojan girls to STC team title

TAMA — The West Marshall girls’ cross country team placed all five scoring runners in the top-12 to win the South Tama County Coed Invitational on Monday night.

Senior Addie Thompson and sophomore Dalaney Eldridge finished 2-3 to lead the Trojans in the race, running respective times of 21 minutes, 14 seconds, and 21:36. Grundy Center’s Grace Storjohann paced the pack at 20:41, while fellow Spartan Evelyn Geerdes was fifth in 22:37.

East Marshall junior Sydney Hull claimed fourth place in 22:07 to lead the Mustangs, who finished last out of five scoring teams in an invitational that included 10 squads.

West Marshall totaled 32 points with freshmen Zoey Wignall scoring sixth in 22:38, Kielly Kasal came in 11th in 23:23, and Ella Randall claiming 12th in 23:27.

Grundy Center was second in the team standings with 48 points, followed by North Tama (73), South Hardin (104) and East Marshall (112).

For the Mustangs, Ava Hendricks (24th, 26:09) and Abigail Hendricks (25th, 26:26) also contributed to the final team score.

North Tama got a 9-10 finish from Rachael Murty (23:06) and Shawna Cibula (23:10), while Isla Breakenridge was 14th (24:17) and Gabby Seda 20th (25:12).

BCLUW was led by Chloe Switzer in seventh place, as the sophomore clocked in at 22:50. Isabella Stotts was 26th (26:34).

Bree Scabbyrobe was Meskwaki’s top finisher in 19th place (24:53). GMG was paced by Grace Mathern in 23rd place (26:04) and Taelyn Sash in 29th (26:55), while meet host South Tama had just three runners, led by Jayva Gomez in 41st (28:30). Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s lone competitor was Katelyn Monaghan (68th, 37:12).

Vokes wins, Jesina third in boys’ STC Invitational

TAMA — Defending Class 2A state champion Emerson Vokes of Grundy Center finished with a 24-second cushion over his nearest competitor to win the South Tama County Coed Invitational on Monday night at STC High School.

Vokes clocked in at 16 minutes, 23 seconds, to hold off Grinnell’s Cadel Conner, who was second in 16:47. South Tama’s own Barrett Jesina scored third in 17:11.

Grundy Center finished second behind Grinnell in the team standings, however, as the Tigers tallied just 28 points. The Spartans were second at 66, followed by Baxter (91) and South Tama (104) to round out the top half.

East Marshall (120), West Marshall (125), Gladbrook-Reinbeck (176) and Meskwaki (243) completed the list of eight scoring teams in the 12-team meet.

Jayce Fryslie (8th, 18:42) and Leo Block (9th, 18:58) gave Grundy Center three finishers in the top 10, but Grinnell’s five scoring runners all finished 11th or better.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck freshman Caleb Pifkin was the next local finisher, claiming 12th in 19:40. East Marshall’s Austin Pansegrau was 13th in 20:00, STC’s Max Shirmer was 14th in 20:01, and East Marshall’s Chandler Curtis was 15th in 20:04. Brady Jesina boosted STC by finishing 17th (20:13).

Erick Rosas-Canchola collected 21st place (20:34) and Aaron Greene was 23rd (20:49) to lead West Marshall. Caleb Bowser contributed 24th place in a time of 20:51 for Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Brayton Davis led GMG with a 22nd-place finish and a time of 20:37, while Henry Dieleman was 41st in 23:02. Three of BCLUW’s four runners — Tommy Hinderhofer, Garrett Brunner and Olin Hupfeld — packed up to finish 26-27-28.

Jaymison Hill led Meskwaki with a 66th-place finish, scoring 46 for his team with a time of 26:53, while North Tama’s lone competitor was Cayd Cooper (73rd, 29:23).

West Marshall volleyball earns first Heart of Iowa win

PERRY — The West Marshall volleyball team defeated Perry 3-1 in a Heart of Iowa Conference contest on Monday night.

The Trojans (3-10, 1-1) earned their first HOIAC win of the season behind a team-leading 15 kills for senior Arya Wertz. Jordan Hilleman had eight kills and Elyse Ranson added seven. Sophomore setter Makaylie Tarbell totaled 28 assists on the night.

Riley Randall led the West Marshall defense with 22 digs, while Ranson, Tarbell and Wertz all had one block against the Bluejays (0-11, 0-2).

Tarbell served 19-of-20 with four of the Trojans’ 15 aces to lead the way. Olivia Henderson was 16-for-18 with four aces as well.

Bobcat volleyball runs into ranked teams at SEP Invite

PLEASANT HILL — The Marshalltown volleyball team had a tough go of it on Saturday at the Southeast Polk Invite, falling four times in straight sets.

The Bobcats (2-7) were taken down by Class 5A No. 3 Waukee, Southeast Polk, 4A No. 13 Dallas Center-Grimes, and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

For the tournament, Marshalltown was led by Bella Avise with 16 kills. Kinsley Bowie racked up nine kills, while Lauren O’Neal and Harper Wilson totaled six kills apiece. Anela Villarreal had four kills and Brooklyn Smith chipped in with three kills.

O’Neal totaled 33 assists as the Bobcats’ setter.

Defensively, Avise and Gianna Baune led the way with 16 digs apiece. Bowie had 15 digs, and O’Neal added 14. Bowie and Kendall Brummel had team-highs of three blocks apiece, while Smith, Avise and Wilson had two blocks each.

Wilson was the Bobcats’ top server for the day, going 19-for-19 with one ace. Bowie was 2-of-24, O’Neal went 13-for-15, while Avise was 11-for-12 with two aces.
