SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall girls win Pine Lake Run

ELDORA — The West Marshall girls’ cross country team had a trio of top-10 finishers en route to winning the Pine Lake Run title on Thursday night at Pine Lake Country Club.

The Trojans totaled 61 points to lead the field of 10 scoring teams, fending off North Polk (73) and Jesup (90) among others. Grundy Center was fifth with 114, and North Tama was seventh at 175.

West Marshall senior Addie Thompson tallied fifth place to lead her squad, finishing in 21 minutes, 34.5 seconds. Sophomore teammate Dalaney Eldridge was sixth in 22:14.7, and freshman Kielly Kasal captured 10th in 22:39.5. Fellow freshmen Ella Randall (17th, 23:01.0) and Zoey Wignall (25th, 23:58.6) rounded out the Trojans’ scoring efforts.

Grundy Center senior Grace Storjohann led the local runners, finishing third in 21:29.9. Jesup’s Jordyn Bergman was the individual winner in 20:53.9, and Hudson’s Mollie Hansen was second in 21:00.7.

Spartan junior Evelyn Geerdes placed ninth (22:38.6), Maddy and Addy Hendershot placed 26th and 27th, respectively, and Karlee Lynch accounted for the team’s final score in 67th.

Shawna Cibula scored the top finish for North Tama, taking 13th in 22:54.7, and Rachael Murty was 22nd in 23:45.9. Isla Breakenridge (50th), Gabby Seda (52nd) and Lucy Monat (72nd) also scored for the Redhawks.

East Marshall junior Sydney Hull took 12th in 22:53.7. Ava Hendrricks (65th) and Abigail Hendricks (81st) also competed for the Mustangs.

Chloe Switzer placed 28th in 24:06.9 to lead three BCLUW runners in the event, while Meskwaki was led by freshman Bree Scabbyrobe, who was 37th in 24:21.6. Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s lone runner was Katelyn Monaghan (141st).

Vokes leads Spartan boys to third at Pine Lake Run

ELDORA — Defending Class 2A state champion Emerson Vokes won the Pine Lake Run to lead the Grundy Center boys’ cross country team to third place in the final team standings.

Vokes led a trio of top-10 finishers for the Spartans, crossing the finish line first in 16 minutes, 13.2 seconds. Jayce Fryslie scored bronze in 18:17.1, while Leo Block climbed to seventh in 19:14.4.

Oliver Del Castillo took 31st for the Spartans in 20:42.3, and Daniel Barkley placed 35th in 21:20.5 to round out the team’s scoring.

North Polk and Jesup tied for the low score of 52 team points, but North Polk took the title thanks to the sixth-runner tiebreaker. Grundy Center finished with 65 points.

East Marshall was sixth (136), West Marshall finished seventh (149), and Meskwaki was ninth (279) in the 10-team invitational.

The area’s next-best finisher was Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Caleb Pifkin, as the freshman scored 11th place in 19:46.0.

East Marshall was led by senior Austin Pansegrau, who placed 18th in 19:58.2. Cael Curphy came in 32nd (21:00.3), Nathan Frye was 39th (21:26.6), Landon Shoeman was 40th (21:30.3), and Maddux Bennett took 47th (21:44.0).

West Marshall was led by senior Erick Rosas-Canchola, who was 25th in 20:21.6, and freshman Aaron Greene, who emerged in 27th (20:24.5). Jacob Eirikson (41st, 21:30.8), Joseph Swigart (49th, 21:52.2) and Ryan Putney (53rd, 22:06.8) also contributed for the Trojans.

Meskwaki was led by Hagaa Slick-Driscoll, as the junior placed 64th in 22:58.5. Emery Roberts claimed 67th (23:12.2), followed by Hepa Azure (103rd), Markelle Wabaunasee (106th) and Abram Wanatee (109th).

Tommy Hinderhoffer took 36th (21:21.4) and Olin Hupfeld was 42nd (21:33.2) for BCLUW, which fielded four runners. Garrett Brunner claimed 48th (21:50.4), while Manny Hinderhoffer crossed at 100th.

MCC volleyball falls on the road at Northeast

NORFOLK, Neb. — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team dropped to 0-2 on the young season, suffering a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Northeast Community College on Wednesday night.

The host Hawks (3-4, 2-0) won by scores of 25-16, 25-9, 25-17.

Northeast forced MCC (0-2, 0-2) into a negative attack efficiency rate during the second and third sets. The Tigers hit -.031 as a team for the night, recording 19 kills against 22 errors.

Morghan Harvey led MCC with seven kills, while Imigyn Stratton, Violet Hougland and Kaylee LaPlant added three kill apiece.

Addy Stull finished with 10 assists, and Olivia Maddux added six assists for the Tigers.

Sophomore libero Callie Swanson piled up 16 digs for the MCC defense, while Harvey and LaPlant added nine digs each. Maddux added eight and Stull chipped in five.

Stull also led at the net with two blocks, while Stratton and Hougland had one each.
