Bobcat cross country teams sweep Mike Augustine Classic

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ and boys’ cross country teams doubled up and won the 70th Mike Augustine Classic on Thursday night at Ewing Park.
The Bobcat boys captured the top spot in a five-team field with 26 points, as all five scoring runners finished inside the top 10.
Preston Johnson captured the gold medal for the meet to lead MHS, sharing a 1-2 finish with teammate Carter Nunn at the front of the pack. Johnson finished in 16 minutes, 32 seconds, while Nunn was the runner-up in 16:42.5.
MHS senior Myles Goldman came away with sixth place in a time of 18:33.4, and classmate Isacc Ceniceros was eighth in 18:37.8. Costin Piscitelli, a freshman, finished off the Bobcats’ scoring in ninth place (18:39.5).
Des Moines Lincoln (63), North (67), Hoover (97) and East (112) gave chase in the boys’ standings.
On the girls’ side, the Bobcats bagged first place by a narrow three-point margin, 34-37 over Des Moines Hoover. Lincoln (66) and East (105) rounded out the scoring teams.
Marshalltown packed up and ran together to get four finishers inside the top 10, led by sophomore Mallory Meyeraan in third place (23:23.8). Senior Anessa Morrison was fourth in 23:30.4, and freshman Lily Johnson was fifth in 23:48.4.
Grace Whitmore, also a freshman, finished in seventh place (24:02.8), while the 15th-place finish for fellow frosh Airi Hoven (27:02.3) provided the deciding points for the Bobcat victory.
Marshalltown returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, with the Iowa Alliance Conference meet hosted by Ottumwa at the Ottumwa Golf Club.
