Bobcats bag medals, no trophy
MHS boys golf unable to four-peat in Alliance

DES MOINES — The Iowa Alliance Conference boys’ golf championship won’t reside in Marshalltown for the first time in a long time.
The Bobcats fell by four strokes to Ottumwa on Tuesday at the conference golf meet at A.H. Blank Golf Course in Des Moines, settling for the second place after having claimed the first three Alliance titles.
The Bulldogs nipped the Bobcats, 316-320, for the crown.
“Proud of the way the guys battled down the stretch,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “We were right there as a team and just needed a couple better swings on those final holes to make the difference.”
Marshalltown sophomore Joe Greazel got to the top of the podium individually, winning the Alliance Conference medalist honors with a 3-over-par round of 75. He held off Ottumwa’s Stephen Brinegar by one stroke for the top spot.
“Joe Greazel didn’t have his ‘A’ game early on, but did a great job battling back down the stretch to put the pressure on the guys in front of him,” Johnson said. “His birdie on 15 to pull back to a tie for the lead was a turning point in the round. He was paired with both Brinegar and (Michael) Solberg, so he knew exactly what he needed to do. A fight back like that should give him a lot of confidence heading into the district meet.”
Joining Greazel as an all-conference performer was junior Jacob Seberger, who finished in ninth place with a 9-over 81 to gain second-team honors.
Fellow Bobcats Trae Misek, a senior, and Parker Christen, a junior, both shot 82 to tie for the 13th best round of the day, closing out Marshalltown’s counting scores.
Gavin Misek finished in with an 86 and fellow sophomore Bryson Payne shot a 90.
Greazel earned medalist honors thanks to an even-par 36 on the back nine, pairing two birdies with two bogeys to overtake Brinegar. A birdie on the par-4 15th hole gave Greazel the lead, and he kept it for the remainder of the round.
Marshalltown was a four-time defending conference champion, having claimed the first three Alliance titles as well as the CIML Iowa Conference in its last year in the league in 2021.
Now the Bobcats begin a new quest, chasing their first state tournament as a team since 2018. The Class 4A district meet will be held Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill.
