CROSS COUNTRY: Hull, Scabbyrobe qualify for state
JEWELL — East Marshall junior Sydney Hull and Meskwaki freshman Bree Scabbyrobe earned spots at the state cross country meet with top-10 finishes at Thursday’s Class 1A District 7 qualifier at Jewell Golf and Country Club.
Hull finished seventh overall with a time of 20 minutes, 37.0 seconds, while Scabbyrobe scored the final spot by placing 10th in 20:59.4. Scabbyrobe had a 14-second cushion on the next closest runner to secure her spot at state.
Scabbyrobe is just the second Meskwaki runner to reach the state cross country meet, following in the footsteps of Shye Johnson, who qualified as a junior in 2020.
East Marshall’s girls finished seventh out of eight scoring teams in the state-qualifying meet, totaling 138 points. Madrid (40) and Alta-Aurelia (85) earned the team berths from the district.
East Marshall’s scoring runners included Ava Hendricks in 33rd (23:54.4), Abigail Hendricks in 36th (24:07.3), Faith Pardekooper in 40th (24:27.0) and Hayden Braye in 53rd (25:49.3).
BCLUW’s Chloe Switzer finished in 15th place with a time of 22:15.2. Fellow Comets Izzy Morris (26:17.9) and Elle Schipper (30:52.9) placed 55th and 68th, respectively.
GMG was led by Grace Mathern in 35th place (24:04.9), while Taelyn Sash was 45th in 25:07.6.
Meskwaki’s only other runner was Kaelonna Kahler, who came in 66th in 30:14.5.
The East Marshall boys finished sixth out of 13 scoring teams at the South Hamilton-hosted district meet, scoring 153 points. Ankeny Christian Academy ran away with the team title with 31 points, but the chase pack included North Butler (122), Alta-Aurelia (130), Manson-Northwest Webster (133), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (139), East Marshall and Baxter (158) all within 36 points of each other.
Chandler Curtis led the Mustangs by finishing 16th in 18:23.6. Austin Pansegrau was 24th in 18:45.6, while Landen Shoeman (34th, 19:24.9), Maddux Bennett (38th, 19:31.7) and Nathan Frye (51st, 20:10.2) rounded out the team’s scoring.
BCLUW’s trio was paced by Tommy Hinderhoffer in 26th place (18:49.1) and Olin Hupfeld in 28th (19:00.6).
Brayton Davis placed 40th for GMG, clocking in at 19:37.0, while Henry Dieleman was 50th in 20:09.4.
Hagaa Slick-Driscoll placed 74th to lead the Meskwaki trio with a time of 21:36.9.
Redhawk makes it to state
COGGON — North Tama junior Rachael Murty qualified for the state cross country meet by finishing ninth at the Class 1A District 7 invite on Thursday at North Linn High School.
Murty clocked in at 21 minutes, 18.8 seconds to finish comfortably inside the top 10 as North Linn’s Peyton McMahon gained the final individual qualifying spot in 10th with a time of 21:52.2.
Murty’s Redhawks nearly advanced as a team, finishing in third place with 83 points. Hudson (31) and Lynnville-Sully (59) claimed the two teams berths to state.
Aniston Cooper and Shawna Cibula finished 17-18 for North Tama with respective times of 22:36.0 and 22:50.1. Gabby Seda scored 22nd in 22:58.5 and Isla Breakenridge rounded out the scoring times in 26th (23:12.9).
North Tama’s trio of boys runners were led by Kayler Morris in 68th place with a time of 21:25.7. Max Monat was 70th in 21:29.4, and Cayd Cooper came in 78th in 22:04.3.
Columbus Junction (38) and Lynnville-Sully (63) secured the team berths.
No state for Rebels
MASON CITY — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ cross country team came away with 12th place out of 13 scoring teams at the Class 1A District 4 meet hosted by Mason City Newman on Thursday night at North Iowa Area Community College.
The Rebels totaled 316 points led by Caleb Pifkin, who came in 31st in 19:02.0 Caleb Bowser was 45th in 19:43.3, followed by Tavin Ruden (89th, 23:47.6), Campbell Gramer (92nd, 24:36.8) and Levi Coughenour (96th, 35:03.9).
G-R’s lone female entrant, Katelyn Monaghan, was 78th in 32:51.9.
STC’s Jesina makes it 3
WILLIAMSBURG — South Tama senior Barrett Jesina is headed back to state for the third year in a row after finishing seventh at Wednesday’s Class 3A District 5 state-qualifier meet.
Jesina clocked in at 16 minutes, 39.1 seconds to earn a spot in Fort Dodge next weekend. He qualified individually last season and was a member of the Trojans’ first-ever team qualifier in 2023.
South Tama was last out of 12 scoring teams on Wednesday in Williamsburg, totaling 319 points. Riley Stubbs (71st, 20:29.8), Jovanie Perez (78th, 21:05.4), Nolan Arp (81st, 21:37.1) and Kyler Johnson (81st, 21:37.1) rounded out the Trojans’ scoring efforts.
