Marshalltown netters succumb to sixth-ranked Ankeny in straight sets

ANKENY — The Marshalltown volleyball team had its season ended in the second round of the postseason, falling 3-0 to sixth-ranked Ankeny in Thursday’s Class 5A Region 6 semifinals at Ankeny High School.

The top-seeded Hawks moved into Tuesday’s regional final with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-7 victory that lasted just under an hour.

The Bobcats (15-20) surrendered the first eight points of the evening before getting on the scoreboard.

Marshalltown’s defense was unable to stand up to the taller Hawks (26-8), who featured three hitters standing at least 6 feet tall. Five different players tallied seven kills or more for Ankeny, which will host No. 14 Cedar Rapids Kennedy (25-17) in next week’s regional finale. The Cougars topped Waterloo West in five sets.

Marshalltown was led by four players with three kills each: Harper Wilson, Kinsley Bowie, Bella Avise and Lorelai Villarreal. Brooklyn Smith chipped in two kills to go with her team-leading two blocks. Villarreal added a block.

Morgan Hilderbrand led the MHS defense with eight digs while Avise and Anela Villarreal both made six digs against the hard-hitting Hawks.

Setter Lauren O’Neal finished with 14 assists and two assisted blocks, while going 6-for-6 serving with the Bobcats’ only ace. Avise was 7-for-7.

Ankeny was led by Marlee Ellison with nine kills, while Elle Isaacson, Hailey Wiederin and Raquel Risk had eight kills apiece. Quinn Roush racked up seven kills and a match-high four blocks.

Hawks libero Hailey Flanders had eight digs and three of her team’s nine service aces.
