MHS netters settle for 5th in Alliance volleyball

The Marshalltown volleyball team was unable to capitalize on its home-court advantage, sliding to fifth place in the Iowa Alliance Conference Gold Tournament on Saturday at the Roundhouse.

The Bobcats entered as the No. 2 seed from the North Division but couldn’t collect a win in pool play, falling in three sets to Mason City (23-21, 16-21, 15-12) and in two sets to South Division champion Des Moines Roosevelt (21-3, 21-18).

Marshalltown closed out the day with a comeback win over Des Moines East (24-26, 25-23, 15-12) to earn fifth place. North Division champion Ames also claimed the conference tournament title, beating Ottumwa in straight sets in the championship match. Roosevelt topped Mason City for third.

For the day, Kinsley Bowie and Harper Wilson led the Bobcats with 12 kills apiece. Brooklyn Smith tallied seven kills, Lorelai Villarreal pitched in with six kills, and Bella Avise added five. Setter Lauren O’Neal notched 40 assists.

Smith led the defense at the net with six blocks, Wilson had three, and Villarreal had two. Morgan Hilderbrand made a team-high 17 digs, while Bowie had 12, Wilson 10 and O’Neal nine.

Bowie starred at the service line as well, goign 25-for-27 with four aces. O’Neal was 20-of-22 with two aces, Avise was 15-for-15 with an ace, and Wilson was 15-of-19 with an ace.

Marshalltown is back on its home court Tuesday night with a Class 5A Region 6 first-round match against Des Moines Lincoln starting at 7 p.m. inside the Roundhouse.
