New Hawkeye arrested for bar fight

Tavion Banks
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa men’s basketball player Tavion Banks was arrested this weekend for an alleged fight with staff at a downtown Iowa City bar.
Banks was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct, fighting or violent behavior.
Online court documents say Banks was reportedly seen in an altercation with the staff at ReUnion Brewery around 1:16 a.m. early Sunday morning.
The Iowa Athletic Department released a statement Monday morning about Banks’ situation.
“The UI Athletics Department and men’s basketball program are aware of Tavion Banks’ citation over the weekend,” it read. “He is subject to established university protocol regarding the UI Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, and the rules and regulations set for members of the men’s basketball program.”
Banks, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, is one of six former Drake players that transferred to Iowa after Ben McCollum was hired as the new Hawkeye head coach in March.
Banks was named the Missouri Valley Conference Sixth Man of the Year last season, helping the Bulldogs to a 31-4 record in McCollum’s only year as the Drake head coach. Banks averaged 10.1 points and 5.0 rebounds while coming off the bench in 33 of 34 games played.
Iowa will hold its annual media day event Wednesday at noon at Caver-Hawkeye Arena.
