No. 4 Rebels roll through Ar-We-Va
GLADBROOK — Fourth-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck rattled off 30 points in the second quarter of a 56-7 victory over Ar-We-Va in the first round of the 8-Player state football playoffs on Friday night.
The Rebels (9-0) led 12-7 after the opening period before pouring it on with four touchdowns in the second quarter.
G-R quarterback Trevor Mathern had seven carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns, and tailback Treyvon Herron racked up 11 carries for 126 yards and three TDs. Kael Blohm added a 29-yard touchdown run as the Rebels ran for 310 of their 394 yards of total offense.
Mathern finished 8-for-12 passing for 84 yards and two scores, with Hudson Clark reeling in both. He had five grabs for 65 yards.
Ar-We-Va quarterback Johnathan Riesselman scored a 1-yard touchdown run for the visiting Rockets (5-4), who had 278 yards of offense. Riesselman was 13-of-23 passing for 101 yards, while running back Wyatt Ragaller had 20 carries for 126 yards.
Clark led G-R with 12 tackles while Herron had 9.5 stops. Brayden Utter and Chad Gutknecht both had 8.5 tackles, including a quarterback sack for Utter.
The Rebels advance to host No. 10 Easton Valley (8-1) in the second round on Friday, Oct. 31.
Spartans start strong
GRUNDY CENTER — The top-ranked Grundy Center football team secured its 48th straight win with a 57-0 beating of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in Friday’s opening round of the Class 1A state playoffs.
The Spartans (9-0) stormed to a 42-0 halftime lead and breezed through the finish line. Grundy will host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (6-3) this Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Spartans’ biggest blowout win of the season came courtesy of senior quarterback Judd Jirovsky, who rushed just five times for 179 yards and four touchdowns. Grundy Center rushed for 320 yards and eight scores, while Jirovsky was 6-for-6 passing for 93 yards.
Pete Lebo paced the Spartan defense with 7.5 tackles. Cooper Keller had 5.5 tackles and pulled down an interception in addition to rushing for a score.
