SPORTS SHORTS: MCC volleyball squad falls to No. 9 Tritons

FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team suffered its third-straight loss, falling 3-0 to seventh-ranked Iowa Central on Wednesday night.

The host Tritons pushed past the Tigers, 25-11, 25-23, 25-13.

MCC (2-9, 1-8) was led by Morghan Harvey with 13 kills. Violet Hougland had eight kills and Kaylee LaPlant added seven more. Setter Addy Stull totaled 20 assists, while Stull, Olivia Maddux and Callie Swanson had eight digs apiece. Hougland led the way with three blocks as well.

Talya Sampson piled up 22 kills to lead Iowa Central (22-7, 9-0).

Mustangs knock off AGWSR in NICL Tournament

DENVER — The East Marshall volleyball team got its first win against NICL West Division competition since 2018 by sweeping AGWSR in the consolation round of the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (11-18) lost to Class 2A No. 1 Denver in the opening round of the regional bracket, falling 25-9, 25-9. On the back side of the bracket, East Marshall clocked the Cougars 25-20, 25-21, to record its first win over an NICL West foe since beating AGWSR 3-1 on Sept. 13, 2018, in Le Grand.

Against Denver (40-1), Alivia Neuroth had six of the Mustangs’ nine kills, while Mya Gould finished with eight assists. Libby Atcher and Marisa Cahalan had three digs apiece, while Atcher and Ashtyn Wheater both went 3-for-3 serving with an ace.

In the win over AGWSR (5-22), East Marshall was led by Natalie Condon’s nine kills. Neuroth and Cahalan had four kills each, and Gould ended with 17 assists.

Atcher made nine digs while Cahalan and Gould had seven apiece. Atcher was the team’s top server as well, going 12-for-12 with three aces. Kiela Wolf was 10-of-11 with two aces.
