SPORTS SHORTS: Sixth-ranked Comets charge through postseason opener
CONRAD — The No. 6 BCLUW volleyball team breezed through its postseason opener, beating Lynnville-Sully 3-0 in Wednesday’s Class 1A regional quarterfinal. The Comets (33-8) won 25-10, 25-12, 25-19, to advance to host Fort Dodge St. Edmond (10-20) in Monday’s 7 p.m. semifinal.
Grace Farnsworth and Olivia Peters piled up 33 of BCLUW’s 44 kills against Lynnville-Sully, with Farnsworth getting 17 and Peters 16. Kylie Pekarek chipped in five kills for the Comets. Cambria Wayman tallied 21 assists and Sally Ramirez had 12 more for the Comet attack.
Kennedy Davis led the defense at the net with four block, while Farnsworth had a team-high 12 digs. Brinna Benson and Peters added nine digs apiece.
As a team, BCLUW served 69-for-73 with 10 aces, led by Davis going 14-for-14 with three aces.
Mustang volleyball falls to No. 13 Jesup
JESUP — The East Marshall volleyball team tried to play the role of spoiler but couldn’t quite get over the hump, falling 3-0 to 13th-ranked Jesup in Wednesday’s Class 2A Region 5 quarterfinals. The Hawks (22-10) held off the Mustangs (13-27) for wins of 25-18, 25-23, 25-21.
Natalie Condon led the East Marshall offense with eight kills, while Ashtyn Wheater had five and both Alivia Neuroth and Marisa Cahalan had four. Junior setter Mya Gould had 16 assists to eclipse 500 for her career. Junior libero Libby Atcher had 12 digs and Neuroth added 11 to lead the defense, while Wheater had two blocks. Atcher also served 14-for-14 with five of the team’s nine aces.
Rebels rattle off 3-0 win over Meskwaki
REINBECK — The No. 9 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team vaulted past Meskwaki for a 3-0 win in Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 7 quarterfinals. The Rebels (25-13) opened postseason play with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-4 win over the Warriors (5-17).
Elly Sieh and Kennedy Brant had 12 kills apiece to pace the G-R offense. Jada Cheville had eight kills and setter Kailey Larsen finished with 32 assists. The Rebels hit .427 as a team.
Brant had three of the Rebels’ eight assisted blocks. Larsen led the defense with eight digs, Cheville had seven, while both Brinn Schneider and Ayla Baer had six digs. Larsen served 23-for-23 with five of G-R’s 14 aces. Leila Thesing was 12-of-14 with four aces.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosts Don Bosco (20-15) in Monday’s regional semifinals.
Redhawks befuddle BGM in three-set sweep
TRAER — The North Tama volleyball team mowed down BGM for a 3-0 win in the Redhawks’ postseason opener on Wednesday night. The third-ranked Redhawks rolled to the 25-7, 25-13, 25-15 victory.
Kruiz Ewoldt lifted the Redhawk attack with 15 kills, while Alaney Sienknecht added eight. Cayleigh Heller and Lily Sell both had six kills. Isabelle Gropper had 18 assists and Heller had 14 more.
Addison Hochstetler led North Tama’s defense with 14 digs while Sienknecht had 10 and Ewoldt eight. Haydn Wilson was 18-for-18 serving with four of the team’s 13 aces. Sienknecht was 13-for-14 with five aces and Ewoldt went 10-for-10 with three aces.
Kinze Lacaeyse, Ana Coleman and Mya Beck had three kills each for BGM (12-10).
North Tama hosts North Mahaska (17-9) in Monday’s regional semifinal at 7 p.m.
Spartans ransack Tigerhawks
GRUNDY CENTER — The fourth-ranked Grundy Center volleyball team turned away Colfax-Mingo for a 3-0 win in Wednesday’s second round of the Class 2A Region 4 bracket. The Spartans (33-9) won by scores of 25-12, 25-13, 25-6.
Ryanne Brubaker dominated at the net with a whopping 18 kills to lead Grundy Center offensively. Jenna Blythe had seven kills, Charlee Kirkpatrick added five and Trinity Jirovsky tallied four. Lauren Zajac totaled 21 assists while Caturella Brown chipped in with nine.
Allison Koch contributed to four blocks while Brubaker had three. Kirkpatrick led the Spartan defense with 10 digs. Zajac was 26-of-27 serving with three aces, while Blythe finished 19-of-19 with five aces.
Grace Hunsberger led Colfax-Mingo (12-16) with four kills.
Grundy Center hosts Earlham (20-15) in Monday’s regional semifinals.
