SPORTS SHORTS: Wolverines wallop Collins-Maxwell on Senior Night

GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team scored an Iowa Star Conference sweep of Collins-Maxwell (2-20, 1-4) on Senior Night, winning 25-10, 25-15, 25-22 on Thursday.

The Wolverines’ offense was led by seniors Rhianna Murty with 10 kills and Landry August with seven. Sophomores Riah Boege and Arianna Pierce pitched in with four kills apiece, and senior setter Hadlee Hempy racked up 25 assists to go with three kills.

Madison Bryant led the GMG defense with six digs, while Hempy, August and Ava Maddux had four digs each. Pierce had the only block for the Wolverines (8-17, 4-1).

Murty racked up six aces on 19-of-21 serving to lead the way. Hempy was 14-of-14 with two aces, Maddux was 13-of-14 with two aces, and August was 12-of-13 with three aces.

Trojan netters no match for No. 13 Roland-Story

STATE CENTER — Class 3A No. 13 Roland-Story stayed unbeaten in Heart of Iowa Conference volleyball with a 3-0 win over West Marshall on Thursday night. The visiting Norse (21-7, 6-0) scored set wins of 25-17, 25-8, 25-9.

Arya Wertz had four of West Marshall’s nine kills in the loss, while Makaylie Tarbell netted seven assists.

Elyse Ranson had the Trojans’ lone block, while Riley Randall made 17 digs. Jordan Hilleman and Wertz both had two service aces.

Tiger volleyball falls at home to Columbus CC

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball squad was swept at home by Columbus (Neb.) CC, falling 25-15, 25-10, 25-11 to the visiting Raiders.

The Tigers (2-8, 1-7) were held to a negative hitting percentage on the night as Columbus (12-13, 3-5) recorded eight blocks at the net. MCC was led offensively by Morghan Harvey, who tallied six kills, while Imigyn Stratton and Kaylee LaPlant had four kills apiece. Setter Addy Stull totaled 15 assists.

Violet Hougland contributed three kills, while she and Harvey had one block apiece. Harvey also had a team-leading eight digs, LaPlant had seven, and Callie Swanson finished with six.

Stull, Swanson and Maddy Wiese each had a service ace, but the Tigers were aced 15 times by Columbus.

MCC returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference action with a match at Iowa Central on Wednesday in Fort Dodge.

Iowa Central wards off MCC men’s soccer, 1-0

The Iowa Central men’s soccer team denied Marshalltown Community College an upset by scoring the lone goal in the 88th minute of the No. 17 Tritons’ 1-0 victory on Wednesday on the MCC campus.

Vito Salvatore Calla scored unassisted to lift the nationally ranked Tritons (9-2, 3-1) to the eventual victory. It was one of only four shots on net by Iowa Central, but it managed to get through MCC goalkeeper Tim Albrecht.

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash featured a total of nine yellow cards and two red cards, both on Iowa Central, but the host Tigers (3-6-1, 1-3-0) couldn’t capitalize.

West Marshall can’t close out Hawks in HOIAC loss

JEWELL — The West Marshall volleyball team couldn’t finish off South Hamilton and fell to the host Hawks, 3-2, in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.

South Hamilton (15-12, 3-3) rallied from a 2-1 deficit for the 23-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-21, 15-13 victory.

Arya Wertz finished with 11 kills to lead the Trojans (4-20, 2-3) at the net. Olivia Henderson had nine kills, Elyse Ranson added seven, Ellie Andrews and Makaylie Tarbell had five apiece, and Jordan Hilleman chipped in four kills. Tarbell totaled 27 assists.

Senior libero Riley Randall led the defense with 28 digs, while Henderson had 17 and Hilleman 16. Wertz led the way with two blocks and was 18-for-19 serving with four of the Trojans’ nine aces. Hilleman served 23-for-24 with two aces.

Tessa Skartvedt led the Hawks (15-12, 3-3) with 26 kills.
