Hawkeyes handle SEMO to stroll to 4-0

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team defeated Southeast Missouri State 99-70 on Tuesday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, improving to 4-0 on the season.

Iowa got out to an early lead, pacing the Redhawks 15-5 six minutes into the first half. The Hawkeyes continued building on their lead, using a 14-2 run while making 8-of-9 field goals in that span to improve the lead to 20 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half.

The Hawkeyes used free throws while creating turnovers to take control of the first 20 minutes. After the first half, Iowa converted on 17-of-26 (65.4) from the charity stripe while shooting 14-of-23 (60.9) from the field. Defensively, Iowa created 10 turnovers it turned into 16 points. At the break, Iowa led SEMO 49-25.

As the second half get underway, it was all Iowa. Junior Alvaro Folgueiras led the Hawkeyes the first 10 minutes of the second half with 10 points on 3-of-3 from the field. Iowa’s lead grew to 29 at the midpoint of the final 20 minutes.

The Hawkeyes led the rest of game and by as many as 30 points. As a team Iowa shot 30-of-49 (.604) from the field including 10-of-23 (43.5) from beyond the arc. Iowa converted on 23-of-39 (74.4) free-throw attempts. Foulgueiras led the way offensively with 16 points while grabbing four rebounds. Stirtz added 15 points while dishing out nine assists.

Manyawu added 12 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. Freshman Trevin Jirak rounded out Hawkeyes in double digits with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. As a team Iowa shot 30-of-49 (61.2) from the field and 10-of-23 (43.5) from beyond the arc. The Hawkeyes knocked down 29-of-39 (74.4) from the free-throw line. Iowa’s bench poured in 50 points, a season high.
