SPORTS SHORTS: Campbell leads Northern Iowa to OT victory at UC Irvine
IRVINE, Calif. — Trey Campbell scored 19 points to lead Northern Iowa, which included a three-point play with 0.6 seconds left overtime, and the Panthers beat UC Irvine 70-69 on Saturday.
Derin Saran made a layup to give UC Irvine a two-point lead with 6.8 seconds left. Campbell took the inbounds pass, weaved down the right side of the court and was fouled as he flipped a driving layup high off the glass before the and-1 free throw capped the scoring.
Campbell added five rebounds for the Panthers (5-0). Kyle Pock scored 14 points while shooting 5 for 10, including 4 for 7 from beyond the arc. Will Hornseth had 11 points and went 5 of 9 from the field.
The Anteaters (3-3) were led in scoring by Saran, who finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. UC Irvine also got 17 points and six rebounds from Jurian Dixon. Kyle Evans also had 10 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and eight blocks.
Pock put up 11 points in the first half for Northern Iowa, which led 35-25 at the break. Campbell led Northern Iowa with eight second-half points and also hit the tying layup with 24 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Hornseth paced Northern Iowa with four points in the overtime.
Drake beats Morehead St. to win Pioneer League again
DES MOINES — Nick Herman ran for 253 yards, including a late 77-yard touchdown, and Drake won the Pioneer Football League and an FCS playoff berth with a 17-10 win over Morehead State on Saturday.
Quarterback Logan Inagawa had an 8-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs (8-3, 7-1) scored on back-to-back possessions to secure the win.
Isaac Stopke scored on a 42 yard burst up the middle to put the Eagles (6-6, 4-4) on top in the first quarter. Stopke finished with 130 yards rushing.
Inagawa’s touchdown capped a 14-play, 90-yard drive and Herman scored on the first snap after Morehead State missed a field goal that would have tied the game with 3:19 remaining. The Eagles kicked a field goal with 22 seconds left but couldn’t convert an onside kick.
It’s the third straight PFL title for Drake, which will play at South Dakota in Saturday’s opening round of the FCS playoffs.
Youngstown State holds off Northern Iowa 35-32
CEDAR FALLS — Beau Brungard accounted for 369 total yards and five touchdowns, and Youngstown State held off Northern Iowa for a 35-32 victory on Saturday.
Youngstown State (8-4, 5-3 Missouri Valley Football Conference), ranked No. 17 in the FCS coaches’ poll, led 28-3 at halftime and 35-18 late in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Northern Iowa (3-9, 1-7) scored on a Harrison Bey-Buie 2-yard touchdown run and Jaxon Dailey’s 34-yard touchdown pass to JC Roque Jr. that capped the scoring with 6:31 to play. The Panthers then couldn’t convert on fourth-and-16 near midfield with 2:00 left.
Brungard completed 20 of 25 passes for 226 yards and threw two touchdown passes. He added 143 yards rushing on 22 carries and scored three times on the ground that included a 29-yard touchdown run.
Dailey was 25-of-34 passing for 352 yards with two touchdown passes for Northern Iowa. Bill Jackson had 115 yards on seven receptions and Roque finished with 99 yards receiving and two scores.
