SPORTS SHORTS: East Marshall girls edge GMG to go to 2-0
LE GRAND — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team held off GMG to claim a 42-39 victory in Tuesday’s non-conference showdown.
The Mustangs improved to 2-0 thanks to a late rally that stemmed GMG’s second-half surge. The visiting Wolverines rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to lead 38-35, but scored only one point over the final five minutes to fall to 0-2.
Alivia Neuroth had 14 points with five rebounds to lead East Marshall, while Mya Gould made three 3-pointers for nine points. Ashtyn Wheater had seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Kiela Wolf chipped in five points.
GMG was led by Makayla Pendleton, who poured in 13 points. Macie Sanders made a pair of 3-pointers on her way to nine points, Skyler Murty added six and Rhianna Murty had five.
The Wolverines shot just 7-of-27 (26 percent) from the free-throw line, while East Marshall was 8-of-24 (33 percent).
MCC men succumb to Sauk Valley
DIXON, Ill. — The Marshalltown Community College basketball team got outscored by 12 in the second half in falling to Sauk Valley, 64-58, on Tuesday night.
The visiting Tigers (2-8) suffered their third-straight loss after getting outscored 38-26 after the intermission by the host Skyhawks.
Prentice Young scored a game-high 16 points coming off the bench to lead Sauk Valley, and Myles Perkins added 15 more in a reserve role. The Skyhawks’ starters shot just 5-for-29 (17 percent), but the bench went 17-for-30 (57 percent).
Antoine Glasper had career-highs of three 3-pointers and 16 points to pace MCC. He also had a team-high three steals. Tom Guma and Chaston St. Vil had nine points apiece, and St. Vil led the team with eight rebounds. Tristan Christopher added seven points and seven boards.
The Tigers host top-ranked Kirkwood on Sunday at 3 p.m.
No. 16 DMACC too much for Tiger women
Four players scored in double figures as No. 16-ranked DMACC defeated the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team 85-58 on Tuesday evening inside the Student Activity Center.
Chloe Costello led DMACC (8-0, 1-0) with 13 points, Breeley Clayburg had 12, Jaxy Knight got 11 and Alivia Carr added 10. The Bears shot slightly better than 50 percent (35-for-69) from the field in sending the host Tigers to their sixth-straight loss.
MCC was led by Jaeda Turner, who scored 22 points thanks to five 3-pointers. Shenell Stewart finished with 19 points and four steals, while Kenijae Cherry had nine points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Tigers (3-6, 0-2) go on the road to face Iowa Western on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
