Appelhans leads Drake’s record-setting 3-point barrage against Western Illinois
DES MOINES — Braden Appelhans made a school-record 10 3-pointers and scored 30 points to lead Drake over Western Illinois 108-57 on Tuesday night inside the Knapp Center.
A 6-foot-6 redshirt junior who transferred in after three seasons at New Mexico, Appelhans finished 10-for-14 from deep to break Jeff Allen’s program record of nine 3-pointers, set on Jan. 13, 1994, against Tulsa. The 10 treys also are the most by a Missouri Valley Conference player this season.
Jaehshon Thomas shot 9 for 12, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc, to add 22 points for the Bulldogs (6-3). Jalen Quinn scored 17 points as Drake made 19 3-pointers in all — also a school record.
Lucas Lorenzen led the Leathernecks (2-7) with 21 points and three steals. Western Illinois also got nine points from Antwaun Massey. Tyran Cook finished with seven points.
Quinn scored 14 points in the first half to help put the Bulldogs up 54-28 at the break. Drake pulled away with a 20-1 run in the second half.
