Bobcat boys close first month with a win

OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown boys’ swimming squad closed out the first month of the winter season with a win at the Ottumwa Quad on Monday, Dec. 22, at Beach Ottumwa.

The Bobcats won five of 11 events to take the top spot in the team standings with 199 points. Host Ottumwa was second (155) followed by Des Moines North (82) and Des Moines Hoover (57).

It was Marshalltown’s second four-team triumph in a three-day stretch after claiming the Bobcat Invite on Saturday, Dec. 20. Both events were previously postponed by winter weather.

“I was pleased with the results and how the boys swam,” said MHS head coach Raymond Dulaney. “They showed focus and competitiveness with a different schedule and routine with break starting. We had a powerpoint increase with a few different swims in the lineup and down Jack Nelson.

“I hope we can keep this momentum into next week with three big and competitive meets.”

The Bobcats got a boost from winning two of the three relay races, but a tie with Ottumwa to start the meet set the tone for a hotly contested victory. Both the Bobcats and Bulldogs posted a time of 1 minute, 52.51 seconds to share the gold in the 200-yard medley relay, and Ottumwa took the next event as well.

Marshalltown countered with two event victories in a row, but the Bulldogs got two more before MHS claimed the 200 freestyle relay.

Before it was over, the Bobcats’ depth helped them overcome host Ottumwa for the title.

MHS was led on the day by Jacob Seberger as the junior was a part of three event victories: 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay. Seberger teamed with Aaron Hunter, Eli Randall and Parker Christen to capture the tie for first place in the first event of the day; he won the 50 free in 24.28, edging Hoover’s Jorel Jones by 21-hundredths of a second; and he led off for Christen, Eli Randall and Kade Randall in the 200 freestyle relay.

Hunter won the 100 backstroke, leading a 1-2 Bobcat sweep along with Zepplin McCulley, and Kade Randall was first to the wall in the 200 individual medley.

The Bobcats have a busy week back into action, starting with a dual meet at home against Mason City on Thursday, Jan. 6. MHS visits Des Moines Lincoln on Jan. 8, and Waterloo West’s Wahawk Invite is Jan. 10 at Central Middle School.
