Bobcat swimmers take own invite
The Marshalltown boys’ swimming team won all but two events to take the title from its own Bobcat Invite on Saturday at the high school pool.
The Bobcats scored 94 points to outpace Cedar Rapids Kennedy (60), Atlantic (52) and Williamsburg (26).
Marshalltown won the first four events and the final five races as well, claiming all three four-man relay events in the process.
It marked the Bobcats’ first win of the season after falling in a pair of dual meets to start the winter campaign.
“It was great to finally have a meet again after the weather got in the way of three meets in a row,” said MHS head coach Raymond Dulaney. “Over the last two weeks coach Lucas (Santefort) and I have been proud of the resilience and flexibility the team has shown. Having to reschedule three meets in a row is challenging and they took all the changes in stride.”
The Bobcats were led on the day by Jack Nelson and Jacob Seberger, who both won all four of their events. Nelson anchored the 200-yard medley relay, which opened the meet with a win, and swam on the winning 2×50 freestyle and 2×500 freestyle squads.
Nelson teamed with Seberger to claim the 2×50 free in a time of 48.93 seconds, while he joined Thomas Stanley to take the 2×500 free in 11:30.14. In the final race, Nelson swam the opening leg and Seberger anchored the 400 freestyle relay, joined by Joe Greazel and Kade Randall in a time of 3:46.34.
“Coming into this week we challenged the team to ‘turn the dial’ on the season and take our training and focus to the next level,” Dulaney said. “I have to say they responded and raced well after a heavy week of training. While the times reflected the heavy training and there are plenty of little things to keep cleaning up, coach Lucas and I are pleased with the results.”
Aaron Hunter, Parker Christen, Eli Randall and Nelson kicked off the meet with a combined time of 1:53.55 to win the 200 medley relay, followed by Stanley and Hunter taking the 2×200 free. Greazel and Kade Randall claimed the 2×200 individual medley.
The 200 freestyle relay squad of Seberger, Christen, Eli Randall and Kade Randall topped the field with a time of 1:38.27. Zepplin McCulley and Eli Randall joined up to take the 2×100 backstroke, followed by Seberger and Christian claiming the 2×100 breaststroke.
Marshalltown makes up a meet at Ottumwa tonight, traveling to face Des Moines Hoover and Des Moines North as well as the host Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. at Beach Ottumwa.
