AMES — For the first time in 21 years, it’s a Cyclone state on the mat.

The sixth-ranked Iowa State wrestling team knocked off No. 3 Iowa on Sunday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum, beating the Hawkeyes for the first time since 2004 with a 20-14 victory in front of the 10th-largest crowd in Hilton Coliseum history.

Iowa (5-2) had won 35 of the last 36 meetings with Iowa State (2-0), but the Cyclones got the best of the Hawkeyes in front of 12,292 fans to snap a streak of 20-straight Iowa wins.

“Anytime you beat a great team, you’ll remember it forever,” said Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser, a Humboldt native. “And we’ll remember this forever.”

The Cyclones won six of 10 matches — two by bonus points — and got two critical upset victories along the way. Sixth-ranked Evan Frost upended No. 3 Drake Ayala at 133 pounds to give Iowa State the early 6-3 lead on the team scoreboard, and No. 11 MJ Gaitan’s 9-8 decision over No. 2 Patrick Kennedy in overtime at 175 was almost the finishing touch for the hometown Cyclones.

The dual opened at heavyweight, where top-ranked Yonger Bastida gave ISU a strong start with an 11-4 victory over No. 6 Ben Kueter. Iowa drew even with No. 7 Dean Peterson’s 4-2 decision over No. 9 Steve Poulin at 125.

Frost outscored Ayala 11-5, and No. 6 Anthony Echemendia piled up a 15-2 major decision over No. 7 Nasir Bailey to put the Cyclones on top 10-3. The Hawkeyes countered with an upset at 149 as 10th-ranked Ryder Block scored a 2-1 overtime decision over No. 2 Paniro Johnson.

No. 3 Vinny Zerban sent the Hilton crowd into a frenzy with his 11-3 major decision over No. 12 Jordan Williams at 157, but Iowa’s No. 3 Michael Caliendo took the air out of the building with a 20-5 technical fall over Connor Euton at 165.

Caliendo’s five-point win brought the Hawkeyes back to within 14-11, but Gaitan’s triumph at 175 crippled the Hawkeyes’ comeback.

Top-ranked Angelo Ferrari kept Iowa in the running with his 2-1 decision over No. 10 Isaac Dean at 184, but No. 2 Rocky Elam gave the Cyclones one final win with a dominant 8-2 decision over No. 4 Massoma Endene at 197.

The Cyclones return to action Friday, Dec. 5, at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. The Hawkeyes have the Uncivil War on Friday, Dec. 12, at Hannibal High School in Hannibal, Mo., with duals against Chattanooga and Utah Valley.
