AMES — One of the top recruits in the Matt Campbell era of Iowa State football will enter the transfer portal.

Alex Manske, a former four-star recruit out of Algona High School, announced he will officially place his name in the transfer portal when it opens in January.

Manske is just the latest in a long list of Iowa State football players to commit to leaving the Cyclones since Campbell did the same. Campbell departed after 10 seasons as the head coach at Iowa State to take the same post at Penn State on Dec. 5, and a number of his players are planning to leave Ames as well.

According to CycloneFanatic.com, Manske is the latest of 28 players who will pursue other options through the transfer portal, including starting quarterback Rocco Becht, tight ends Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle, running back Carson Hansen, wide receivers Brett Eskildsen and Xavier Townsend, linebacker Caleb Bacon, and defensive backs Jeremiah Cooper and Jontez Williams.

Redshirt freshman running back and kick returner Aiden Flora announced on his social media accounts on Christmas day that he would be returning to the Cyclones. Flora was a big-play weapon for Iowa State in the fall, returning eight punts for 209 yards and a touchdown. He also had eight kickoff returns with a 21.4-yards per return average, and contributed 58 yards rushing with a touchdown.

Manske was heavily recruited out of high school by schools such as Iowa, Kansas State, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.

“These past weeks have been crazy and nothing any of us expected,” Manske posted on X. “I’d like to thank God for all of His blessings, including the opportunities that He has given me within the game of football.

“I’d like to thank Coach Campbell and the staff for believing in me and supporting me throughout the journey. I’ll forever be grateful for all you have done for me.”

Manske played in just three games this past season for Iowa State, completing 4-of-5 passes for 28 yards while rushing seven times for 33 yards. He preserved his redshirt, meaning he will be a redshirt freshman at his next stop.

Connor Moberly, Iowa State’s backup quarterback, has announced he will remain in Ames.

“I’d also like to thank Iowa State University, the fans and the community for your support this past year. You guys make Ames a special place to be,” Manske wrote. “To my teammates, I am grateful for all of the friendships we’ve made. I will forever cherish the time we spent together and the many memories we created this year.”

Manske completed his senior season at Atlantic without throwing an interception in seven games, completing 69 percent of his passes for 1,456 yards with 18 touchdowns. He also shined on defense, but had his season end early due to an injury.

In his high school career, Manske had almost 5,000 yards passing with 1,414 yards rushing and 49 passing touchdowns to go along with 27 rushing scores. He played baseball, basketball, golf and track and field at Algona.

Starting at $4.38/week.
