SPORTS SHORTS: Bench helps MCC women put up fight in defeat

NORFOLK, Neb. — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team sustained its 10th-straight loss, falling 79-61 to Northeast CC on Saturday afternoon inside the Cox Activities Center.

The host Hawks got a season-high 24 points from Vilique Fallis, who made all of her six 3-pointers after halftime. Northeast (8-4, 3-3) scored 48 points in the second half to pull away from MCC (3-10, 0-6).

Aweng Akoi added 17 points, Aaliyah Jones had 13 points, and Ida Klausen contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds for Northeast, which outrebounded MCC 44-28.

Jaeda Turner and Ariyanah Custard both scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Tigers. Custard’s total was her career high.

Olivia Heartwell added 11 points and Kenijae Cherry had eight points and a team-leading 10 rebounds for MCC, which was derailed by 21 turnovers.

West Marshall boys fall to Saydel at Casey’s Center

DES MOINES — Gage Moreno scored a game-high 30 points to lead Saydel past the West Marshall boys’ basketball team in Saturday’s Heart of Iowa Conference showdown inside the Casey’s Center.

Moreno shot 13-of-16 from the field, had nine assists and four steals for the Eagles (4-0, 3-0), who shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range. Jacob Oltmanns finished with 16 points and Nathan Walterbach added 10.

Teegun Edler had 16 points to lead West Marshall (3-2, 2-2), and Evan Siegert scored 15 more. Ryder Gile contributed 11 points and Beckham DeSotel added 10 as the Trojans fell behind 41-26 by halftime and couldn’t recover.

Mustangs march to 3-0 by hammering Huskies

OELWEIN — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team powered out to a 44-23 halftime lead on its way to an 86-45 triumph over Oelwein in Friday’s North Iowa Cedar League contest.

Blake Neuroth and Jaxson Boswell scored 12 points apiece to lead the Mustangs, who improved to 3-0 overall and in NICL play. Jackson Bidwell, Dallas Miller and Cael Curphy contributed nine points apiece, while Cody Weaver and Jackson Busch scored seven points each for East Marshall. The Mustangs shot 8-of-13 from 3-point range (61.5 percent).

Landen Whitaker scored a game-high 19 points to lead Oelwein (0-3, 0-3).

Oelwein’s fast start too much for East Marshall girls

OELWEIN — McKinzie See scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Oelwein girls’ basketball team past East Marshall 75-53 in Friday’s North Iowa Cedar League clash.

See scored 16 points before halftime to lead the Huskies (2-1, 1-1) to a 41-13 advantage at the break. Haydin Becker added 22 points in the win.

Alivia Neuroth scored 24 of her career-high 26 points after halftime to lead East Marshall, making a pair of 3-pointers in addition to going 6-for-9 from the free-throw line. Sydney Hull matched her season-high with 12 points and Ashtyn Wheater added eight points for the Mustangs (3-2, 1-2).

BCLUW boys sustain first loss at hands of HLV/TC

CONRAD — Tucker Donaldson scored a game-high 31 points to lead HLV/Twin Cedars past the BCLUW boys’ basketball team, 62-42, in Friday’s non-conference game.

Donaldson shot 13-of-19 from the field, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range, and was 3-of-3 at the free-throw line for the Warriors (3-2). Sean McCulloch added 14 points as HLV/TC got all of its scoring from four players.

BCLUW (3-1) was led by Wyatt Gould with 13 points and Aiden Frank with 12 more. Daniel Zoske added seven points and seven rebounds, while Avery Schipper chipped in four points and a team-high eight boards.

Comets clipped by Warriors in non-conference play

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team tried to rally in the second half but couldn’t catch up in a 29-24 loss to HLV/Twin Cedars (2-3) on Friday night.

The Comets (1-2) were led by Chloe Switzer with 16 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. Addison Moeller added four points and a team-leading 13 rebounds, while Adelynn Zoske pitched in four points and four boards in the non-conference defeat.
