SPORTS SHORTS: Courter’s win punctuates weekend for West Marshall
MOUNT VERNON — West Marshall junior wrestler Urijah Courter won his state final rematch to claim first place at the Mount Vernon Invitational on Saturday.
Courter, the top-ranked 120-pounder in Class 2A by IAwrestle, defeated Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s No. 3 Simon Bettis in the championship match by a 6-5 decision, scoring a late escape to claim the tournament title. Courter beat Bettis 10-7 in last year’s 113-pound state final.
Courter (9-0) was West Marshall’s lone champion on Saturday at Mount Vernon, helping the Trojans take sixth in the final team standings. West Marshall had 128 points while E-B-F won the tournament with 237.5 points ahead of host Mount Vernon (200.5).
Riley Hanford (9-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the 138 finals, falling in 50 seconds to E-B-F’s eighth-ranked Kaden Kirkpatrick to score second place on the day.
Kinnick Geers improved to 8-2 on the year with a third-place finish at 157. He was defeated by third-ranked Hudson Scranton of Anamosa in the semifinals, falling in 2:31, but wrapped up a 3-1 day on the mat with two pins and a technical fall.
Landyn Gutierrez (113), Bryce Crawford (165) and Jacob Dare (285) all finished in fifth place in their respective brackets, while Jon Gonzalez (132) was sixth.
Trojan girls challenge themselves at Ankeny Duals
ANKENY — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team went 1-4 to finish fifth at the Ankeny Duals on Saturday.
The Trojans tussled with a cast of larger schools and settled for one win, beating Indianola 54-12. West Marshall fell to Ankeny (66-18), Mason City (42-36), Des Moines Public (42-36) and Pella (48-30).
Leading the way for West Marshall was Elyse Ranson and Reese Buschbom, who both finished the day 5-0. Ranson (155 pounds) recorded a forfeit and four wins by fall in a total time of 4 minutes, 34 seconds. Buschbom (190) had two pins and three forfeits.
Bella Sosa (170) went 4-1 with two pins, two forfeits and a lone loss to a ranked wrestler. Sosa was pinned by Class 2A No. 12 Aliayah Shade of Ankeny.
Reagan Buschbom (235) tallied a 4-1 day as well, recording three pins and a forfeit.
Kielly Kasal (100) was 3-2 with two pins, a forfeit and two losses by fall to two of the top-ranked wrestlers in the state. Kasal was pinned by No. 1 Nora Ohnemus of Indianola and No. 3 Piper Phillips of Mason City.
Bruner brings in gold for SH-BCLUW boys
NASHUA — The South Hardin-BCLUW boys’ wrestling team finished sixth out of nine teams at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament on Saturday.
The Storm scored 66.5 points to finish ahead of AGWSR (53.5), Waterloo Columbus (47) and West Fork (27). Independence won the team title with 300 points, followed by the host Huskies (221.5) and Sumner-Fredericksburg (134).
Garett Bruner (5-1) scored a bracket championship to lead SH-BCLUW, winning the 126-pound title with a 3-0 day that included three pinfalls in a combined 2 minutes, 55 seconds.
Beau Towne (165) and Logan Kolbe (215) both improved to 6-2 on the season with third-place finishes at their respective weights. Parker Pagel picked up fifth place at 138, while Conner Teckenburg (144) and Brock Collins (285) both finished in seventh.
