SPORTS SHORTS: DeSotel drops 21 as Trojans silence Thunder
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team outscored Grand View Christian 15-5 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 53-47 victory in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
Beckham DeSotel scored a career-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds to lead West Marshall (3-1, 2-1) to the win. Connor Kemmerer added 10 points and eight boards, and Evan Siegert scored 11 points for the Trojans.
West Marshall went to the free-throw line 36 times in the game, getting 24 attempts to go down, as Grand View Christian (1-3, 1-2) was whistled for 28 fouls. Four players fouled out, including leading scorer Daniel McCloud (16 points) and Brayden Hoben (12).
GMG girls outdone by No. 13 Blue Devils
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team couldn’t keep up with Class 1A No. 13 Martensdale-St. Marys in a 51-28 loss to the Blue Devils in Monday’s non-conference contest.
The Blue Devils (4-1) led 23-10 at the half and continued to pull away for the win. Rylie Fugate led MSM with 18 points, five rebounds, six assists and six steals, while Carly Franey cashed four 3-pointers on her way to 15 points.
GMG (1-3) was led by Makayla Pendleton with seven points. Skyler Murty finished with five points and a team-high eight rebounds, Arianna Pierce had five points and five boards, and Macie Sanders chipped in five points.
Wolverines defeated by Martensdale-St. Marys
GREEN MOUNTAIN — Three players scored in double figures as the Martensdale-St. Marys boys’ basketball team defeated GMG 51-30 in Monday’s non-conference pairing.
Colton Wright scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Blue Devils, who got off to a fast start and led by nine at the half. MSM (2-2) used a 21-9 third-quarter advantage to break free for good. Jack Gavin and Slade White added 10 points apiece.
Easton Sash led GMG (1-2) with 11 points, while Ethan Klemesrud and Rider Kupka chipped in seven points apiece. Kupka led the Wolverines with six rebounds and Klemesrud had three steals.
