SPORTS SHORTS: East Marshall snaps 14-game losing streak to Rebels

REINBECK — Three players scored in double figures as the East Marshall boys’ basketball team beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck for the first time in eight seasons, winning 78-49 in Tuesday’s season opener for both teams.
The Mustangs claimed the NICL West win to top the Rebels for the first time since sweeping them in 2017-18, ending a 14-game losing skid in the series.
Blake Neuroth poured in 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting to lead East Marshall, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range. Cody Weaver got 16 points and Jackson Bidwell finished with 14, also making four 3-pointers. Jackson Busch, Dallas Miller and Kael Koch contributed seven points apiece in the win.
Trevor Mathern scored a game-high 21 points to go with 12 rebounds to lead the Rebels. Hudson Clark added 11 points and six boards.
Wolverines open with lopsided win at Valley Lutheran
CEDAR FALLS — The GMG boys’ basketball team opened the season with a 58-14 victory over Valley Lutheran in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.
The Wolverines held the host Crusaders to six points or fewer in all four quarters, highlighted by a 12-0 advantage in the opening period.
Rider Kupka scored a game-high 13 points to lead GMG, while Ethan Klemesrud finished with 12 and Jacoby Woodbury 10. Easton Sash chipped in with eight points off the bench.
Jason Neifer led Valley Lutheran with six points and seven rebounds.
Trojans tumble in Heart of Iowa opener at PCM
MONROE — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team fell in a back-and-forth battle with PCM in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference opener for both teams, losing 48-37.
The host Mustangs (1-1, 1-0) were led by Joe Shaver’s 10 points. PCM jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first quarter but had to cling to a 22-20 halftime lead. The Mustangs’ 16-8 third-quarter advantage proved to be the difference.
Beckham DeSotel scored a game-high 15 points to lead West Marshall (1-1, 0-1), while Teegun Edler tallied 10 points. The Trojans got to the free-throw line 29 times but couldn’t convert enough to tally the win.
“It was a tough, hard-fought game, and there was a lot to build on with the guys,” said Trojan head coach Kory Hobbs.
Connor Kemmerer and Ryder Gile chipped in with four points apiece for West Marshall, which visits Perry for Friday’s conference clash.
No. 4 Rebels rough up Mustang girls, 72-10
REINBECK — Preseason-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck roughed up the East Marshall girls’ basketball team to the tune of a 72-10 setback in Tuesday’s NICL West Division opener.
The visiting Mustangs (2-1, 0-1) fell behind 18-2 after the opening quarter and trailed 45-7 at the half.
Sydney Hull had four points and eight rebounds while Alivia Neuroth had four points and five boards to lead East Marshall in defeat. Mya Gould added two points, but the Mustangs couldn’t overcome the fourth-ranked Rebels (1-0, 1-0).
G-R was led by Kennedy Brant with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Elly Sieh had 20 points and 10 boards. Natalie Witt chipped in nine points off the bench for the Rebels in their season debut.
West Marshall girls pinned at Mason City triangular
MASON CITY — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team took two dual meet losses at a triangular hosted by Mason City on Tuesday night, falling to Gilbert (54-24) and the host Riverhawks (66-18).
The Trojans were led by Bella Sosa at 170 pounds, as she went 2-0 with a pair of second-period pins. Grace Greenwood (145) and Reese Buschbom (190) both earned wins by pin against Mason City, while Kielly Kasal (100), Elyse Ranson (155) and Reagan Buschbom (235) scored pins against Gilbert.
